Memory seats and Outstations UK 2001 model plus a specification question...

With winter setting in I am about to tackle a few niggles with my P38. Heated seats being one of them but before I start that strip down I would like to try and sort out the memory seats as well since they are fitted and if possible whilst they all disconnected resolve both issues. A friends fault software ( sorry i dont know the exact code ) reported a passenger seat outstation problem. All the electrics for both front seats works apart from the memory.

So my questions are ...
  1. My car has a '1' and a '2' button on the drivers seat (right hand side) but not the left ? Is this normal ? Should I have memory buttons on both sides of the car ?
  2. Are there outstations under each seat ?
  3. Are they both the same part number if they are fitted under each seat ?
  4. I only have key 1 and 3 so I dont expect it to remember my better half's position but provided I use number 1 as my key it will remember my position ? Shes 5'2" and I'm 6' so hate it when she forgets to put the seat back.
Regarding specification I have been told my model is an 'autobiography'. It has the plate under the bonnet etc and is on the V5 registration document. From reading the forums I gather this is a model where the first owner could specify certain options. Is there any way to ascertain what the original owner specified since it looks the same equipment wise apart from the Sat Nav to my friends HSE ? Wood trim aside.

Apologises in advance if these are silly questions but my head is fried from trying to sort out the mess made of the stereo install by the previous owner since its a HK model and the threads on after market installs are so confusing per RR config that I thought I would try something a little easier to sort out.

Re: Memory seats and Outstations UK 2001 model plus a specification question...

Memory drivers seat was standard on some models while a memory seat for the passenger was an option if the drivers seat had memories. So the Autobiography probably came with the drivers memory seat but not the passenger one. Having had a memory drivers seat in my LSE I can see the advantage but can't really see what use a passenger memory seat would have.

A memory seat will have an outstation but a non memory seat won't. So you'll have one on the drivers seat but not the passenger seat which is probably why the software is reporting a problem, it isn't there!

Keys 1 and 2 will automatically adjust the seat and mirrors or, if as in your case you are missing a key, you can simply press and hold button 1 or 2 on the seat to move to the memorised position. The Classic LSE system wasn't sophisticated to adjust the seat from the key so if my wife had been driving mine I would just open the door and poke the button to move the seat so I could get in!

We got a lot less of the 'Special' editions than other markets and they were often only the odd extra bit of trim that was an option on other standard models in the range. So your Autobiography is probably the same as an HSE or Vogue but came with one or two things that were options on the others as standard. The one that always amused me is the Range Rover County which is basically a base model with virtually no options whatsoever other than a County badge.

If you take your V5 into a LR main dealer they will be able to give you a printout from their system which will tell all the details of your car. It will give things like radio code, EKA code, key numbers and any options that were specified when it was new.

Thanks Gilbertd. Will do the V5 once it finally comes back from DVLA with the LPG/Alt fuel on it. Got the amend tax tax for two weeks but no V5 as yet rofl.

Re the seats.. My 'memory' doesnt work on the drivers seat so should I buy a new outstation for the new drivers seat or is there something else I should look into? Its not life critical just bugs me that its a fault that I could probably solve when I take the seats apart to hopefully fix the heating issue.

The memory seat in the Classic used a separate ECU which dies but looking at the diagram for the P38 memory seat it's all done in the outstation. I can have a look in the parts manual and see if there's more than one part number (which there almost certainly will be as there seems to be for just about everything else).

Any help appreciated. Will be able to post the exact fault code Friday ish when it goes in to have some heat treatment for the tracking done. I hate wasting money on parts that I dont need ie it will always report that fault even though its not a fault if you get my drift. I downloaded Rave from the link on the forums here. What page should I be looking for the wiring etc or is the 'parts' manual a different thing ? Spot the newbie :) Thanks for your patience.

RAVE, Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, section M4 for the diagrams but I can't find it in the parts manual which is a separate thing. It's not the most intuitive of things though. In body electrical, electronic control units, it lists every ECU in the car including the door outstations but not the seat outstations. In interior trim it doesn't mention seats, so i gave up I'm afraid.

No worries. Appreciate the effort.

Re: Memory seats and Outstations UK 2001 model plus a specification question...

Memory seat outstations only had one revision according to the parts catalogue I use.

Part Number AMR3883 was the first version, and superceded by AMR3359

Regarding the operation of the memory system...

Will it supposedly 'store' a memory setting (press and hold Memory, and one of either the 1 or 2 buttons?) If not, then it could be either a switch or the connector from the memory switches into the outstation.. Or the outstation itself..

Regarding the setting of the memory seat from the key (Lazy Unlocking as it's called in the owners manual) Key 1 (or 2) will ONLY set the seat (and mirrors!) to their allocated preset by pressing and holding the 'unlock' button on the FOB... IF the vehicle was SUPERLOCKED. If the vehicle was just locked normally (single press on the 'lock button on FOB) then even if you press/hold 'unlock' it won't set the seat to the preset.

My key has lost the sticker on the back of it, so I did it on my 2001 to see what key I had. I set the seat all the way forward in preset 1 and all the way back in preset 2. Then set the seat in the middle of the travel, held my breath, superlocked it, prayed to the P38 gods that all of the doors would actually unlock again when I hit the button, and pressed/held the unlock.

Much to my relief all the door unlocked as they should, and the seat moved itself to the rearward position - hence I figured out I have Key 2..

I think that it's a bit of a pain that it doesn't do it under normal locking conditions, but then I'm the only one that drives the RR, so doesn't make a lot of difference to me.

If I were in the position of using it all the time, I think I would end up disconnecting the wiring to the superlock motors so I could have the lazy unlocking, but not have to worry about the vehicle being superlocked, and then not being able to get it open again!

The other bit have already been covered... Most vehicles with memory seats only had drivers memory fitted.

Autobiography vehicles were basically a normal spec vehicle with whatever customizations the particular buyer wanted. It could be anything from a bit more wood trim, through to completely different pain colour, leather colour - especially in the earlier days, when 'Autobiography' was introduced - you could basically have anything paint/interior wise done if you were willing to pay for it!

Take a look at this video (I remembered seeing it on youtube awhile ago when you mentioned about Autobiography model and found the link)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEbrvFjT-ho

It basically was either the sales pitch or a mini insight into what autobiography was about - and it's aimed at the P38 :)
