Issue: Windows Fogging Up

This morning was extremely bad, dangerous I would say. In less than a minute side windows and windshield were very difficult to see out of. No matter what setting I used, nothing seemed to help. Anyone else seen this issue??

Yes, my FE has heated windshield too and even with it on, the left and right edges of the front windshield still fogs up. Obviously, the heated front windhshield does nothing for the all the side windows, as they all fog up completely. So let me ask you this, sblvro: how does having a heated front windshield “take care of this issue quickly”? Are you suggesting being able to see through the front windhshield alone and not the sides is all that’s needed to be able to drive safely? Some of us don’t have the luxury of living in a warmer climate like Arkansas where rolling down all our side windows during winter is an option, without freezing our a55es off that is.

I can understand your dilemma. AR is my primary home but my secondary is Michigan. Midmichigan in fact and I know what fogging of the windows in the morning is. The heated windshield will clear up the front and you can open the front sides if you need to sprite quickly. The interior felt will wipe off the fog. The rear is taken cared of by the rear defrosters.

Well I got my zip-tied Velar back! I missed it. Really is a great driving car, which is why I've been so tolerant of all its teething problems.

Speaking of which, they finally fixed the defective front roof seal, replaced the center armrest trim with the proper color leather covering, fixed the loose front passenger trim panel, and did a software update that seems to have made most of the electronic infotainment gremlins go away... for now.

Well, actually there's a new problem. Since I got it back, the engine auto-start/stop seemed to have stopped working properly. It somehow defaults to off now and I have to manually turn it on after every restart. Not a big deal but if I remember correctly, all 2016 cars and newer from all makes and models that have the auto-start/stop function are supposed to have them on by default per federal regulations to comply with the stated CAFE rules and whatnot as that's how their fuel economy is achieved as listed on the Monroney sticker. Oh well, I'll bring that up when it goes back in later for the real fogging issue fix.

I am one of the warmer climate owners and just stumbled across this post. I found it interesting only because two weeks ago my wife and i spent a weekend in Reno and had our car parked with the valet at Grand Sierra Resort. It was 15 degrees in the morning when we summoned our car. We got about 15 minutes on the freeway headed to south lake Tahoe, and couldn't see a thing, even the windshield lol. We both shook our heads and as the day warmed up it went away. Back to nor cal where its warm and forgot the issue ever happened.

I guiess we will take it back to the dealer once we know the fix is available as we have been down the discovery loaner road before and would like to avoid it if we can!

We just bought a Velar about one month ago and have the same issue. Everyone's like "oh its your adjustments or its just the weather"... NOPE its a major design flaw with the Velar. The dealership gave us another Velar as a loaner while they look into ours... Low and Behold... That one is just as bad. The longer the car ride and cooler the temps the worse it is... Defrost cranked does not work. This is a major design flaw.

I'm a newbie here as well but just wanted to report that I'm having the same issue with my Velar. We live in Indiana where it is currently below zero, so not only do all the windows remain fogged up; the interior ices over as well. I found it interesting that my local dealer was unaware of any issues - they're currently "researching" - I hope quickly as in this climate the car is 100% undrivable.

Hi this is my first post on this site, bought a 2018 Velar Dec 18th left the dealership at around 8.30 pm at night 10 mins into the drive all windows fogged up could not figure what to do but did open windows etc etc was not a very safe drive home, called Land rover in the morning and they said bring it down but was leaving to go to England for Christmas but they said it must be something in the set up. Took it for a drive in the morning Dec 19th same thing all windows fogged up.
So Got back to Canada yesterday so I thought I would ask Google why do the windows on a Velar fog up and your site came up great info here which I will take to Land Rover Calgary. Did take the Vealar out today and guess what same thing happened so when I got back called Land Rover and they say it only happens when it gets below -15C but today here in Calgary was -3C, while we were away Calgary went down to -31C and then when you add the wind chill it got down to -41C thank god was not here to drive the Velar.

Mine fogs up at times also but right at the minute i just don't have the time to get it to the dealer. What I have found that gets me by for now is:
--Adjust the small side vents so the air is blowing out toward the windows.
--Crank the air conditioning up.
--Hit all the defrost buttons.
Seems to work at least in the weather conditions I experience. Pacific Northwest. Rain, freezing and warmer.

The Auto/start feature has quit working also. I don't really care because it's......weird but it's something that should be working so it's a fault in the "system".

Car drives like a dream.

Update on my 2018 Velar R-Dynamic

Took it in on Thursday and they had five (5) recalls to do.

1) Regarding fogging recall code N143 no parts are needed what has happened is the link arm from motor to flap for recirc/outside air is not set right so when it opens it goes passed where it is meant to stop which causes the link are to fall of the motor, this then closes the flap and noe the fresh air cannot get into the car, this has now been fixed because they set the link arm correctly. No more fogging

2) Recall N106 they have to inspect the rear footwell speaker wires, this is complete

3) Recall N125 Gateway Module (GWM) Configuration, this is complete
n
4) Recall N109 and N116 one is to do with changing the armrests between driver and passenger they say that there is to much play in them, the other was something to do with the air suspension bags, these two they need to order parts and I have to go back once they receive.

The service tech at Landrover was really helpful in explaining the points I think going forward I will keep calling them to see if there are other recalls.

Hope this helps, fogging issue has gone away and just love driving this Rover, I have had quite a few Rovers so am use to a few thing go wrong with them.

Yeah good luck with that “fix”. Let’s see how long that lasts.

That was the original fix prescribed on the initial service bulletin, which has since been invalidated after several cars were repaired by setting this “link arm correctly” only to return with the problem again because the initial fix eventually causes link arm failure where you can’t set it properly again. According to some USA dealers including my own, Land Rover has already acknowledged that there is a flaw in the design and have already designated a new replacement part that are to be produced and delivered by the supplier. This is the part we are all waiting for. Some have already received the same “fix” you are describing by setting the arm correctly, only to find out that the arm will eventually fail again. An alternative temporary fix has been to ziptie the flap open until the new redesigned arm replacement arrives. I guess your dealer hasn’t quite gotten the memo yet and are going by an older TSB fix.

UPDATE on Velar Fogging windows, Land Rover found the problem and it is a software problem with the vent door opening and closing properly due to the software issue.New software has been released to the dealers and from what i've been told it takes aprox. 1 hour to download the new software to your car and it s a fix:dance:

My dealership said it's both hardware and software. Apparently there is a vent arm that the software passes an incorrect open command to. This can cause the physical part to become malformed. The software fix resolves the issue completely IF the physical part has not become malformed. The dealerships are waiting on the physical part replacement (there is a temporary fix they can perform) to replace any that have become bent. In my case the software update and temporary fix resolved the issue, and as soon as the physical part arrives it should be completely fix

Thanks for clarification and details. This clear description is the first to actually make sense in it's entirety. The conflicting info and lack of follow through has been painful on this thread. The various "facts" from various sources have been laughable... including the LR service managers I meet with on a regular basis. They are so in the dark for all of this save for the temp fix to keep folks on the road.

They temp fix takes minutes to complete. Anyone unwilling to have the temp fix performed until the new arms arrive and software is revised is nuts. We have first hand positive reviews of the temp fix... get it done and accept this entire thing is just a first year glitch and part of being a first year guinea pig dealing with growing pains.

Service manager called and said that the part are expected to arrive this week. Wow, quite a long delay from the "early-January" that was originally estimated.

And just to confirm someone else's post regarding this fix: It is indeed both a hardware (actuator arm) replacement and software fix for most Velars. There are a few cases where the owner may not have tried to activate the recirculate button at all, or the car has not been used much that the recirculate flap actuator arm has not been damaged yet, and in such cases a software update may be all that's needed. According to my service advisor, even if the arm wasn't damaged, they are prepared to inspect and likely replace the arm anyway as a precaution.

Killer great update masmole. I've been off line with my LR contacts for a few weeks. Software update is time consuming, but easy. Glad to see they will be replacing the flap arms as precautionary.

heckuva lot faster than the first gen L322 front diff failures that were not optional... they were "when the heck is it going to happen". If it weren't for John and RRnet a recall may never have happened on that BMW nightmare
