In-dash cupholder repair?

I've got a new-to-me 2003 HSE, and the first time I went to use the passenger side dash cupholder, it shot out of its holder like a rocket onto the floor. Both the cupholder cartridge as well as this metal spring fell in the process. Looks like the seller may have somehow jammed it in there to look fine while I was looking at it.

Can anyone point me to how I repair this and get it to function again, or do I have to buy a whole replacement assembly?

Thanks.

Ours was jammed in most of the time and then fell to pieces also. I did some research and found a quote for about $100-. If all the pieces are there you might be able to fix it if you can get a mental handle on all the pins and springs. Now that my fuel pump seems to be working I should consider repairing this as we are always short on cup holders it seems. I will check with a breaker to see if the car they have has one. What am I saying-still a very frequent noise from the front end to figure out.

I recently spent far too much time removing, stripping, cleaning, lubricating and re-assembling mine when I was changing my dash trim. It still doesn't work properly so I'll either screw a small brass drawer pull knob to the front so it will open or better still, buy a new one.

HD you definitely have a way with words. My guess is that you have likely done a documentary or 2.;-)

Yes, two or three perhaps.. I spent most of my working career writing advertising copy and directing/shooting/editing TV Spots for Toyota! These days, I just make short videos to promote my personally guided enthusiast rail tours to Taiwan and Japan. Much more fun...

PS That white gear - yes, it was there in mine but because of the friction in the drawer, there was not enough tension to get it to slide in and out properly.

Theres a small white plastic gear that connects to that spring. The gear engages on a rail inside the fixed portion of the cup holder, and as you push it back in it winds the spring up tighter. When you pop the cup holder off is latch to open the spring turns the gear and drives the cup holder out. If its missing the cup holder won't come out on its own. Its a pain in the butt to reassemble it once its out. took me a couple of trys to get mine back in after I took mine apart to clean and lubricate it.

You can try to get another wrap on the spring to provide more force to turn the gear, I ended up gleaning mine all out of old coffee residue and whatever dust bunnies were living in there, then waxing all the sliding parts with butcher block wax (hard wax used on wood floors) and it works OK now. Doesn't shoot out but does slide out nice and smooth under its own power.

That sounds a good idea. Yep, it might be worth another play...
