2005 RR Transmission Control Module Replacement?

Hey all,

Looked for a tutorial, but couldn't find one anywhere. I need to replace the transmission control module on a 2005 RR Westminster (if that matters). Has anyone done this before themselves? Dealership wanted $2,000 for the part alone, but I find them on Ebay used for $250 and new online for $850. Would love to be able to do it myself if possible.

Is there a tutorial out there? Where is it located on the truck? Is it as simple as it looks (just unplug the old one and plug the new one in), or is there some sort of reprogramming that needs to be done?

Any help or info you could offer would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

The transmission ECU lives (together with the engine ECU) in a nice protective & controlled environment in the E-box (the big black plastic box on the RH inner wing).

For that reason, they rarely give problems.

The transmission ECU is plug & play so it can just be swapped over (though clearly different ECUs will have learnt different long-term adaptions). The US and ROW ECUs have different settings so make sure that you get one from an American vehicle.

Phil if you see this, I could use some guidance. I had a 3-4 shift issue so using your awesome information on this site, I was able to drop the valve body/mechatronic unit out and put in a couple new solenoids. Problem is, the truck is together now, but it won't start. Everything works as normal, just won't crank and key will only turn once then it won't go past the "on" position. There is no gear shown on the dash (usually it shows "P" for park and so on) but when I shift through the gears nothing comes up. I also have a fault showing a communication failure from the TCM something to do with an algorithm. I checked the connector sleeve and plug, there was some tranny fluid in there so I cleaned it as best I could and ensured a tight connection, but no luck. My IIDTool isn't even showing a transmission ECU at this point so it seems it isn't connecting. Any ideas on what to do?

Probably didn't get the shift lever inside the transmission aligned properly. Theres a slide on the mechatronics unit that fits on to pins on the mechanical shift arm, if that slide isn't properly lines up you get no start, and no dash indications.

Theres a picture in this thread; Replaced solenoid in mechatronic unit
Hi Mark I need help as well is the tcm and the transfer case module the same for a 06 RR sport if not how can I get the part # for the TCM please...
