Hey Guys,
Last weekend while at the National Land Rover Convention in Montrose, Co we met Jay Stout from Cooper Tires, he's one of the Territory managers, ha also drives a Black Classic that has been lifted, so he's a RR fan.

Long story short, they now has a 18" Cooper Zeon offroad tire, very similar to the Nitto Terra G, with some improvements in tread design and most importantly sidewall strength. Adam from offroading.com had them on his truck and said they worked great offroad and more importantly are quieter than the Terra G, which have a little road noise. This is great news for the guys here who have the 18" rims, but many of you do not, which is what I explained to him.

We (the RR.Net forum) need to try a grass roots level of requests that will get Cooper to make a tire we want in the USA, they already make something similar in the UK. So I'm asking everybody to post their votes on this poll and send him and email if your interested, maybe we can get these thing made for us! Please email Jay at CJSTOUT@coopertire.com , we told me he would pass these emails on to the brand managers who can get these thing made.

Lets see if this can work!

Is the sidewall 3-ply??
I think so, although Nitto now makes two "flavors" of Terra Grapplers in that size (285/60/18 ), the original 3-ply and a heavy duty, "E" load rating 10 ply version with more sculpted tread. The latter is a bit more money and both are available from America's Tire. Probably noisier and stiff on pavement, though.

Nittos never had 3-ply sidewall...they have 2-ply sidewall that i feel is thin. I think that only their Load Range E gets the 3-ply sidewall.

I think that you're confusing between tread plies and sidewall plies.

General rule to reading Load Ranges:
P-rated tire = 4 plies
Load Range C = 6 plies
Load Range D = 8 plies
Load Range E = 10 plies

Thus, most (if not all) tires with Load Range E will have a 10-ply tread.
But, these are TREAD PLIES. Sidewall is either 2-ply or 3-ply.

Zeon LTZ

The Zeon LTZ is a 2 ply sidewall. Cooper historically has a thicker sidewall than many other manufacturers. We are running the tires on the Great Divide Trek II and I'm waiting for feedback from Adam at Off Roving as to how they performed. Will let you know.

I witnessed the Cooper at the LR rally last weekend and was very impressed with the tire. Adam's sport really griped the wet sand/rock unlike the other tires that were on the trail with us.

Not only did this tire perform, but it also looked great on the RR sport.

When it comes time to replace the ones I have now, I am thinking of dropping to a size 18" rim and a set of Cooper's. The only draw back is dropping down to the 18" and not having a good place to store a spare. That will play a big part in my decision.

If you guys get a chance, then i would do a direct A to B comparison of the tires sidewall before spending a load of cash on something that may prove to be weaker than what you have now. Since it's 2-ply sidewall, i would be **** sure that it's thicker than other 2-ply sidewall tires. Remember, you guys have 18-19" rims which means that the sidewall is compromised enough.

A few years ago i did a direct comparison of sidewall thickness between Nittos TG 285/60/18 with my stock Yokohama Geolander 265/60/18. At the time, i really wanted the Nittos to work because i needed an AT tire for off-roading...so, there was bias towards the Nittos. I was very disappointed when i actually reach in and felt the thickness of the sidewall between the two tires. Both were P-rated tires. The Nittos sidewall felt/was thinner than my stock Yokos. I had to refund the Nittos and looked for other options. Here was my experience with Nittos: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/g-class ... ght=nittos

Thus, i would be careful before ordering these Coopers. IMHO, i always trust a BIG company over a small one. Personal bias.

Thai,
I can certainly appreciate your concern. Tires can be very subjective. Cooper Tire is actually a bigger company than they may appear on the surface, 5th largest in the world. One of every four light truck vehicals in the US is on Cooper tires. We own Mickey Thompson and build tires for Pro Comp among many others out there. Besides that we're just a good company to do business with. Cooper Tires - Don't Give Up A Thing! Ask Off Roaving.

I personally have been bugging hte hell out of Nokian reps for them to make us the Nokian SUV WR tire in our 255/55/19 XL size. I have never had a bad Nokian tire. I had them on my BMW X5 4.4, and got 65K out of them in all 4 seasons, and they were also AWESOME in the snow and ice, great in the rain, and very good on dry.

e-mail these guys and bug them!

Good to know. How does your sidewall strength compare to other tires of the same size??

Thai,
Traditionally, Cooper is known for stronger than normal sidewalls and bead packages. I have not seen a cutaway of the Zeon LTZ yet. Beyond what testing was done in development of the line at our test track, which has an off road test area, the toughest challenge that I'm aware of was Off Roaving's Great Divide II with over a weeks worth of crossing some of the better passes in Colorado. No sidewall failures! Made me happy and more so them happy. Ideally, I'd like to see us build some fitments in our Discoverer STT Tire with the Armor Tec 3 sidewall. It is truely awsome! We will see. http://www.coopertire.com.
Thanks for your interest.
