Some of you may have noticed posts that are obviously AI generated, by a user with the name ForaFrank. In the past, if anyone posted an AI generated reply to a query or question, it was deleted by the moderators. If you want a question answered by AI, you can use Google but if you want a technical question answered by someone that has experienced the same problem and how they fixed it, you come on here (or a similar forum as other forums do exist) inhabited by human beings.
However, recently posts started to appear from a user with the name ForaFrank which were obviously AI generated, gave generic advice that, in many cases, was incorrect. As Admin I took the decision to ‘spam clean’ him which means he is banned and all of his posts are deleted (the same process that is used on other spammers that post on here). Shortly afterwards I received a message from the management at VerticalScope, the company that owns this site, telling me that he shouldn’t be banned as he is operated by the site owners. They then unbanned him and re-instated all his posts.
Since then he has been posting replies mainly concentrating on posts that haven’t had a reply. The argument from VS is that they want to make new members feel welcomed so they will want to remain on the site and participate more. Some replies are absolutely laughable where it is obvious he doesn’t understand the question, others are simply unhelpful.
I have made my feelings known that there is no place for AI, particularly when they have tried to give him a cheerful character so he not only answers a question but rambles on trying to appear welcoming. In reply, they offered to start a thread where users of this site can give their opinions and this they have done. Unfortunately they have hidden it away in a part of the site that even I wasn’t aware existed.
