This is what we did today- engine changed

The Sport Supercharged slipped a liner - maybe from an overheat. A new engine was bought from LR and we set about fitting it today. Another mechanic had stripped the heads off without lifting the body. I think it would be easier with the body off - so we removed the body, pulled the engine and fitted a new crate engine.

Yes, a 2006 Sport with quite low kms. Not totalled as they are still worth a lot down here - still in the region of A$70k-80k and insurance wouldn't have covered the damage.

I'm told the engine was A$19,000 as you see it. Add labour and extras needed and it will be an expensive job. The owner has already paid most of it.

It's the standard 4.2 SC engine. The engine is stamped 428PS near the engine no. If that is the power, that converts to 315kW or 422 BHP.

What the hell? That price! Yikes!
New about A$184K (US$186) on the road. An Autobiography over A$200K (US$213K).

Do you see why we get annoyed when Americans complain about the cost of fuel or cars or why we get envious of college (or even 16-yo) kids in the US who have an RRS or similar?

We have a luxury car tax in Australia. Any car over A$57,466 (current threshold) gets hit with it (on top of the 10% GST). Many cars are over that price here. Basically, the LCT rate is 33% on the value over the threshold.

Our neighbors to the north get a bit screwed on the prices too compared to the US, but not nearly as bad as you blokes downunder.

They'd trade it all for a single meat pie with mushy peas and potatoes from Harry's Cafe de Wheels http://www.harryscafedewheels.com.au/Menu.aspxif they ever had one. Can't get a good meat pie anywhere in the US. :(

I haven't been to Harry's for quite while. A bike ride (motorbike) might be in order.

Sounds like a good trip. They always tasted best at night...right before the last ferry to Mosman Bay if I remember correctly.

After reading an earlier thread about pricing, MSRP in US and invoice, no wonder LR doesn't have to haggle pricing. They can just ship them around the world and make a lot more money on them ele where. I'm just glad I got one, even if it's used and a whole lot to maintain. I'm sorry to see those prices, god bless.

Land Rover doesn't make any more money on the car, the only reason the car is priced so much in other countries is because of import taxes.

...and, in Australia, luxury car tax (on any car over $57,600)

Interesting, similarly we Singaporean get even more annoyed when we hear of complains fm any country citing cars are expensive. `)

To put it in proper prospective, A Range Rover Sports SuperCharged costs S$425,000 which is A$326,642 or US$343,475 or GBP£ 214,000! Bet you guys must be feeling better already?

Tax over here (Singapore) is 150% of Vehicle fm Factory including Freight & Insurance. Then you have ARF tax of 20 or so % , GST 7%, dealers mark up of approx 25% (most main agents needs this min sustenance percentage of profit as cars registered here is minuscue compared to other countries) & lastly, you have the COE which is basically a Certificate of Registration in which one needs to bid for it before vehicle can be registered. June quantum for 2000cc & above engine capacity vehicle costs S$68,000!

Hope you guys are refreshed & recharged + super duper happy that your ride is a steal when comparing to prices that we have to shell out & lastly, we have to scrap or export our cars after 10 years for the COE tenure are for 10 years & if we decide to kept it, then we'll need to bid for the COE again & prices depends on supply & demand. Oh, road tax here is also a killer, a RRSC road tax costs S$6200 yearly

Someone has to pay for all the law enforcement needed to keep chewing gum out of the country. ;)

So, this may sound crazy to Aussies and Singaporeans, but instead of getting annoyed, either move or vote the government that creates those laws out of office.

Move to where that's better than here ( for most things)?

Unlike the USA, we in Oz cannot put Propositions to change/rescind laws. Basically, once a law is in place it's almost impossible to have it removed. Changing govt. does nothing.

Ron are you working for Rover now since you retired from the rail company?
No, still retired, Leo. One year today. I happened to be visiting the workshop and offered to give them a hand. I drop in there quite often and do a bit of work just to keep up. I do have keys to their workshop and another workshop 2 doors away so I can use their hoists and tools of a weekend if I need to.

Elisabeth wants me to get a job. I've been offered a job with a local company but haven't take it up.

That's quite a job! And expensive
