So I recently purchased a 1996 range rover hse with 131k and it has no brake pressure at all. The abs mod runs nonstop when the key is in the ignition and shuts off after I take the key out . My computer was just recently stolen so I cant downlad any repair man. Any advice would be greatly apreciated

I let it run for about an hour or so and the pump kept running but never pressuredized Il try scrubbing everything down tomorrow and flush and bleed the system and see what happens. I apreciate the info and ill be on the look out for the write up on the washers.

Whats the probalityv of it being a faulty pump? I ask because where iam located they are not easy to come by and I have some one holding one for me for 200 but he also has other buyers. Ill cross my fingers

So I have no pressure in my brakes so I inspected my abs mod and it wasent producing that much pressure so I replased it and also cleaned my master cyl resivoir, flushed and bled my system and still the same exact prob I bought the car in this condition and really need it running any info will be apreciated.

Hi

Check the brake fluid supply. Changes are that filter in the brake reservoir is clogged and fluid can not get to the pump. Remove the suction pipe, drain the brake fluid and take off the reservoir and clean the inside with washing detergent and water mixture and shaking the tank while holding the bottom connection closed with your finger. After this rinse and repeat till filter is clean. You can see the dirt if you shine with a torch light underneath the tank. Check out vipe rover from south africa he has info about this filter with foto's. Make sure the inside of the reservoir is 100% dry before refitting.

It is also possible that the car has been sitting there for a long time and the plungers in the pump element are sticking. To check this you have to open and inspect the pump. 3 allen bolts and the cover will come off. Be carefull to align the parts properly when reassembling or you can snap the small steel driveplate in two. The pump unit has 3 small plungers inside that should be free and move up and down without resistance.

Last but not least the plastic washers inside the brake unit can be broken and these have to be replaced with steel washers. There is a very long post about these washers. If this is the case pressing the brake pedal with your foot will also not make any pressure in the system and might even damage the inside parts of the brake unit.

Just a thought - the pump takes about 30 seconds to build up pressure from cold and less after use. Did you wait that long? Also maybe turn on the key and quickly get out and see if the fluid level in the plastic reservoir is actually going down. You will hopefully see the level through the plastic.

I did my car´s first even brake fluid change a couple of years ago (´95 4.6) and the plastic was so dirty inside that I could hardy see the fluid level. I put a handful of small stones in the main part and shook the unit so they acted as an abrasive then cleaned the rest as Jos suggested. It worked a treat.

Just a couple of thoughts
