In my endless quest to update my L322 High spec edition to a slightly “higher spec edition”, I was replacing my worn seats and found some really nice ones from a trim package that was much higher than my truck was built with. I attached a picture to show the original seats side by side with new ones. (The new ones have dual side 12 way control, seat memory on both sides, motorized headrests, full climate control, and rear seat entertainment, and a slightly larger frame size that comes up higher on shoulders). They came out of a 2012 L322 that also had rear electric reclining seats as well.

The mystery is there are 5 connectors going to the new seats and only 3 going to the old ones.

Basically the connections are:

connector #1: 24 pin connector - used on all seats many pins are unused on lower end trim seats (but this has seat motors, climate control, airbag connections, occupancy sensor, etc)

Connector #5: Square multi pin shielded cable - used for rear seat entertainment (usually connects to rear entertainment module in LH quarter multimedia stack. This is only present on seats with LCD displays in headrests

Connector #3: 12 pos dual row heavy conductor wires (mostly for seat heaters)

Connector #2: 4 pin small connector - this is used for SRS signals like seatbelt tension sensor/pretensioner

Connector #4: And the mystery connector on the new seats is a 14 pin connector consisting of 10 smaller gauge conductors, and spots for 4 larger power conductors (IIRC only 2 were populated). Does not appear to be for heat, seat cooling, motorization, or rear seat entertainment. I dug through every wiring diagram, and can’t find this connector for a front seat. It is present on both driver and passenger seats. I attached pictures of the connector and what the new seats look like compared to the old ones. (New ones have rear seat entertainment, motorized headrests, full climate control, etc)

I know they had a massage feature/option, but I don’t think these seats have it as there are no separate controls on the seat for that beyond what a full 10/12 way memory seat with lumbar would have.

can anyone here provide insight on this? I dug through every electrical diagram I have, and can’t find any case that shows this connector. And these wire colors and PIN numbers did not match up with any diagram.

Your original type seats use a simple pair of heat pads, one in the seat's cushion, one in the seat back.

Your "new" seats have a completely different heat/cool system, which runs through a small module under the right front seat, with the hot/cold selections chosen from the respective selector switch housed in the center dash area immediately below the facia vent.

There is an upper and lower standalone Peltier loop and small fan connected to a curved duct to flow the selected warm/cool air into the seat cushion through a centrally located vent. The seat cushion heat/cool duct can be easily identified if you tip the seat backwards. FWIW, a very common failing of the heat side/Peltier loop is due to the plastic duct fracturing and overheating the Peltier loop, which then shuts off and the small fan quits blowing.

Although the actual seat switches appear very similar between the old and new seats (although your "new" seats will have more external selector buttons, including adjustable headrests) the later switch circuits work in an entirely different way.

The later seats have individual seat modules mounted above the plastic trim held to the seat base by four T30 screws. The seat's memory selections are stored in these modules.

What model year is your L322?

@anvilrob Thanks for the quick reply. I am aware of all of this. But everything you are stating are contained in the 3 main connectors I've already mentioned (that even the old seats had, but with many pins unpopulated/unused). According to wiring diagrams, the climatic seats don't need any additional incoming electrical harnesses. (expect for ones equipped with rear seat entertainment - but that's a separate connector all together)

Its a MY2010-2012 L322 as stated above (there are no changes with respect to climatic seating or rear seat entertainment within these model years).

1. The 22 position connector (referred to in wiring diagrams as C2947/C3041) contains all the seat motor information (including blower motors).

2. Heating elements are connected by C0752/C0255 which is the 12 pin connector with heavy wires.

3. C2378/C2379 (4pin) are the passenger side airbag and belt tension connectors.

4. which leaves two connectors (C2952/C3110) is the rear seat entertainment LCD module

5. and the other is the "mystery 14p" connector?!?!??

The climate control module (D243) I know is different between climatic seat models and simply heated seat modules (it has an extra two knobs on it below vehicle temperature controls to independently control each seat temperature). I already replaced this with the correct version. Furthermore, I already installed the seat climate drive module under passenger seat to drive the blower motors (This is connected by C3140/C3141/C3142 in the wiring diagrams). I also updated the Car config file to change expected climate control settings from heated to climatic seats and also memory passenger seating to allow on demand self test and seat calibration through SDD.

As far as modules go, the main difference is the passenger seat uses a memory module which basically replaces the high current switch pack in the older seats with a box that has a bunch of relays and motors have position sensors (since it is memory seats). It's also on the CanBus now (PSM - Passsenger seat module), and endpoints can be calibrated through SDD.

Also I believe the Peltier is only used for cooling, the heating uses conventional resistive elements?

It still doesn't answer my question about the mystery connector mentioned above.... Do you have any information about this connector?
I also updated the Car config file to change expected climate control settings from heated to climatic seats as well as enable memory seating on passenger side so it will allow on demand self test and seat calibration through SDD

FWIW, I re-read your original post several times in an attempt to identify the model year. While you do make mention of the "new" seats coming from a later model maybe you could point out where your actual MY on your car is stated?

I asked the question because, not having a clear understanding of the CAN-BUS platform you're working with, and that the oblique picture you provided (with the clipped off upper B-post which is where the MY2010-12 have side the airbag badges) and the lowly lit C-post your picture could just have easily been from any MY2008 onwards.

If I missed it I apologize.

Anyway, that connector is plugged into a connector from the body harness which contains the following 1-14 pin colors:

Pin 1 Purple/orange
Pin 2 Yellow/purple
Pin 3 Gray/orange
Pin 7 Gray/brown
Pin 12 Red

Pins 4,5,6,8,9,10,11,13 and 14 are empty
Best of luck with this project.

BTW, the Peltier provides HEAT. The cooling is merely boosted ambient cabin air which LR presumes is already "cooled" sufficiently from the existing cabin HVAC being selected towards a cooled AC temperature.

@anvilrob yes there, thanks for the follow up and the info! I’m so stumped by this because it does not appear to be in the factory wiring diagrams.

the vehicle these seats came from was 2011 or 2012, the one they are going into is a 2010. You are correct, I didn’t clearly state which vehicle they were going into (I apologize if I didn’t make this clear). I tried to pick from same model years so it would be a hopefully relatively easy retrofit. (Body harnesses should be the same between my10-my12, but they had a few different versions depending on options)

I can verify the vehicle they came out of had this harness present and connected. I’m attaching some detailed pics of both sides of the connector on the seat side so you can see which pins are populated. The two heavy wires on ends are blue and white and appear to be connected to each other. This connector appears to be related to seat motorization.

any more help you can provide figuring this out would be greatly appreciated!

I was completely unaware that it used Peltier for heat, I thought it used same resistance heater wire sewn into seat covers as the normal heated seats. Does the heater work as well as standard heater seats? (I was always very happy with performance of those)

here is the pinout from the seat side:

Mystery connector pinout

1 Wht (heavier wire) - connects to pin7

2 Grn/org

3 Gy/Org

4 Blk

6 Blu/Red

7 Blu (heavier wire)

8 Not Connected

9 Gy/R

10 Wh/R

11 Not Connected

do you have any diagrams of a body harness that includes this connector?

Well I did a lot of reverse engineering, and I was able to conclude that the mystery connector is definitely related to seat motorization as it goes directly into the seat memory module (PSM). The seat does appear to operate properly without it connected with no DTCs from the PSM module. The vehicle it came from had it connected, but not sure where it was connected to. I fixed all of my motorization issues (now all seat memory functions work), but it was unrelated to this connector, so it’s still a complete mystery to me what this connector is used for???

Here are the pinouts I traced from all the seat connectors:

HI, were you ever able to work out the issue? I am staring a the same mystery plug (from an L322 2010) my RR is 2009, I’ve replaced my old seats, the only seat that doesn’t work is the drivers!!! My RR has 3 plugs, the new seat has 4! I’m scratching my head? Thinking of replacing the existing scruffy blue leather covers with the 2010 covers!
