Hi I've looked on Rave and on my 98 2.5 RR but cannot sem to locate my MAF - Maybe I don't have one? The Air filter is on the Right hand front corner (as I look at the front of the car) but it just leads to a flexi pipe across onto the black plastic that sits across the engine and to a rubber pipe the other side - can't locate a Maf - Should I assume that not all range rovers have one then and that this will save me locating it and money on a new one or is it hidden somewhere else?

If memory serves correctly, I have only seen on P38 diesel in person, the MAF is bolted to the air box with the flexline clamped to the MAF. This topic jsut came up about a week ago as well. You might hunt up the earlier thread and see if the OP responded with results.

Thank you, I have looked on the aug 17th - Mystery of the Bosch Maf section one of the reasons I thought that might be the problem with my car running for 3 secs only - but I only have the Flexi pipe going to the airbox nothing else between?

Your car does not have a MAF and a MAP is there instead. MAF is available after YOM 2000 including EGR setup, I guess.
MAP is located on the diesel filter housing which has a tube connected from intake manifold.
BTW, why do u need to change it?

I vaguely remember something about EGR and non EGR diesel models. One used MAF and the other used a air temp sensor. Again, knowledge is a bit fuzzy since we don't have the diesels here in the States. I don;t have RAVE with me this morning but I'm sure there would be a diagram and description in the fuel system section.

Re my thread - runs for 3 seconds -

4 months ago i was driving slowly and up came gearbox fault everything died and I steered the car to the kerb. The garage in France where I am are as baffled as me as to the problem ( I was low on fuel and on the way to fill up) So I have the car back - charged the batt and it runs for 3 secs and dies. I read that it could be the maf but as you say I don't have one - glad to hear that as thought the garage may have nicked it ! lol - so I have a map instead any chance you could give me some quick info on what that does or whether it has anything to do with my fault - I only have an eas reset tool - but have to locate the bonnet switch before I can reset to get of the bump stops (after 4 months) as the bonnet says its not closed when it is. this is just the beginning - so fed up ! any help would be good -

Yes looked at it in my rave download but as i was looking for a maf that I do not have it was confusing me - apparently i have a map - something else to find out what it does and whether it has a connection to my gearbox fault coming up - If i can find the money for a nono thingy tester would you know how much or where I can get one from pleeeease ?

Nice to know you do have something then... a MAP ... and which measures pressure not flow (and can not be cleaned like a MAF)...

Unfortunately your problem is likely to be something nasty/$$ (- like a blocked DPF -) but get some proper diagnostics (ie. Fault Code Reading specific for P38 Diesels) done first....

Thank you for clearing my head with one answer and now confusing me with another :crybaby2: what is a DPF please? and where is it - I am going back and forwards to my rave manual looking for things - I did have a guy come around and check with his diagnostic machine but he wasn't a mechanic as such so couldn't repair stuff ( he was free with a machine ) his fault came up with

" when you first start the engine extra fuel is supplied to the pump but when the engine starts it goes to normal running and that normal supply of fuel was not getting to the engine and thats why it stops "

I had already renewed the top part of the fuel pump as it was leaking and the garage replaced the 2nd half and the copper washers on the fuel lines afterwards and the car ran normally no problems for 3 weeks before coming up gearbox fault - Dah !

Did you consider googling ' blocked DPF ', Monkey..... and then the resultant 'Diesel Particulate Filter' ?

If it is this (although I think your car is too old to have one, phew !) then there is also a dash warning light for this problem anyway...

Now, can you recall which 'particular' Fault Codes came up with your 'free mechanic' (ie. that provided his explanation above) ? - As this could provide other clues as to the exact problem ?

See also the fuel filter [on the left of the MAP picture I posted above...] but fuel for that 'first 3 seconds' also comes via this of course..

The fact that "gearbox fault" came up and then everything went dead.Do you mean that there were no lightsw on the instrument cluster at all.If that is the case then I would suspect a electrical issue, possibly burnt tracks, relays etc in the under bonnet fusebox..Total loss of all electrical power, whether permanent or intermittent is often traced back to the fusebox.

I guess it's fuel related. Did you check the fuel filter? may be it's partially blocked. Remove the output fuel line from the diesel filter and connect it to a can of diesel & see. hold the can above the engine level.
