Come and have a good and guess what this sound is.

Info.

Coming from the left front side
Knocking, tapping noise.
Happens when idling in Drive or P
Goes away when revs up above 900rpm
Happens while stationary or moving
In Low range and all driving modes (Dynamic, sand etc)
Sound is noticeable from the underbody and not from engine bay
Car has 2 speed transfer case
4.4L SDV8 2015

Lower control arm has ripped boot but no play.

No proper diagnosis yet. Getting thoughts and if anyone had this before.

I suspected drive shaft but car is stationary.

Sound from inside cabin

hard to tell from a pic. Did you try going under while it running to touch and feel what is rattling or vibrating?

as an aside, your lower control arm ball joint looks kinda gnarly but it’s not the cause of stationary noise.

I recall there being some sort of controller box in the exhaust system of a diesel rover that gets loose/rattly. While I can’t guarantee that, I would put my money on that being the culprit.

Yep those arms are getting replaced. Along with sway bar bushes and other arms.

I've never heard of this controller in the exhaust system? Will need to check this. Would it be to control emissions or sound?

Without removing the shield I couldn't feel or pinpoint area of the noise. But is coming from the front end of engine lower section.

After doing some research I have some idea what it could be. I won't know until I get back and inspect it myself.

1. Tensioner Pulley
2. Idler pulleys
3. AC or Dynamic Pulley (unlikely as I'll feel the difference)
4. Crankshaft vibration damper pulley (hopefully not this)

To diagnose the above I will visual inspect while running, checking for loose pulleys or excessive play.

Another way is to remove the accessory drive belt and run the car to see if noise is still there. Doing this only for short runs as water pump is on that same belt.

I believe it will be one of those pulleys as, noise is on idling and doesn't matter if in drive or park. High hopes it is and not a costly repair!

This is the thread that seems similar to the issue you are describing. It’s shows more of a squeal than the sound yours is making but it may be worth looking into.

I would remove the lower shields and inspect things to get an idea if you can narrow down the precise area making the noise.

Thanks for that post, initially they thought it was the pulley too, so I will definitely look at that first.

On my SDV8 it does not have this exhaust valve, so rules out that, cheers for redirecting me to the post.

I will be checking it on Friday and see if I can pinpoint it. Will update here :)

So I've just had the front arms replaced and the sound is still there.

Lower control arms, frontward and rearward
Sway bar links
Sway bar bushes

Knocking noise still evident.

Took it upon myself to have a look at all the above mentioned.

Took the underbody shield off, used the home stethoscope and tried to locate the sound.

Getting noise from what looks to be the power steering rack. Just above the sway bar and cross member.

I tried to eliminate by disconnecting the plug to the rack, located right in the center and just above the unit. Also saw it had the power cables to it.

Disconnected plug, started it back up and still got noise. 😔

I'll have to remove the power to it as it is probably on standby until needed, now to find the fuse for it.

Other than that I found a 50-60mm M5 bolt in between the rack, and wondered where this came from, thought it was the noise 😳 haha.????

Ill get images and video up soon.

For now, just need fuse diagram for this and if anything else is around that area.

So to add the knocking noise is coming from the steering rack.

Does anyone know how these work internally and point me in the direction of a blown diagram of parts? I want to try figure out what could be the cause.

I've still got power steering, full lock is fine. Just on idle and low revs the noise is there but when driving its not.

I had a look around on the net to try and work out if easily replacable.

The electric motor looks to be commonly used through the land rover range and also BMW. It has a gear and drives a belt to the steering rack.

The sound when I used the stethoscope comes from the area circled.

Does anyone have a picture of this cover removed and if there could be anything behind it causing this noise?

Or I could be COMPLETELY wrong and the noise is above this and just radiating down to the steering rack.:ROFLMAO:
In which case.. I'll still trying to pinpoint what is in that area.
