I suggest an oil change at least once a year. 20k between service is insane and will likely lead to problems later.

It will change as you drive it, I think most cars are like that now, it monitors the performance of the engine and adjusts accordingly

Irrespective of the suggested 20k mile service interval, I plan to get oil changes done at 10k engine miles or 1 year, which ever is sooner. There is no hard and fast rule on this and I might well be incorrect but why not err on the side of caution, is my thought. Cost of oil change is not much. It is the "extras" they sell, which cost a lot.

 

I would suggest that you change the oil every 5K miles.
NOTE since the valve trains rely on clean oil to operate,
circulating dirty oil through these precision parts will create increased wear.

Extending the oil change interval service will increase the wear of the valve train and timing chain system.

These extended service intervals suggested by the MFG are done to mitigate the costs to initial owner.
That said it would be worse to buy a truck off lease with 50K miles and just had or its ready to have its 3 rd oil change.

Changing the oil in these trucks is pretty easy now, enough so a DIY guy could change the oil in about 30 mins without jacking up the truck
NOTE they have a drain tube incorporated into the oil fill inlet,
first remove the oil filter this will drain the oil into the sump,
then connect your suction drain machine to the drain port.
amazon sells the suction tool,
you need to get a 10 qt quantity

 

I talked to my service advisor specifically about the long service interval when I was having a hitch installed. He advised to get an oil change done at 10K miles, and follow the service schedule at 20K miles. He also said that the various service packages from JLR and the dealership where I bought the car offer a bunch of other stuff, but none of that is necessary. The 20K service itself is simple - oil change and cabin air filter replacement.

Yes, at minimum an oil change once a year or every 10k miles. The new service intervals nowadays are insane regardless how improved synthetic oils are.

Most modern day vehicles will tell you when it’s time. Yes, there are some gear heads that religiously change every 3-5k but testing have shown that oil can last well over that.
As long as your following OEM suggested intervals I won’t lose sleep. The second you deviate from the schedule the OEM has you in its sights and will probably void warranty whenever they want. I will pay the dealership price ..reluctantly when it’s time… if I don’t want to , I wouldn’t have bought a RR and got a Honda Pilot. Not offense to Honda pilot. It’s a solid SUV that will last 200k for a lot less then it will take to maintain a RR at 75k

 

With my JLR vehicles I do it every 5k miles and alternate between the dealer and doing it myself. That way they have a record of them doing it every 10k miles. When I perform the oil change I also take a pic of the oil and filter I am using so I have a date stamp that coincides with my service log. Only buy JLR oil and filter.

 

what about a p550e...less 3-5k miles annual (probably closer to 3k, really)...most of which is driven on EV...
still annual oil change? and what about overall service/maintenance check?

 

Modern car ownership consists of a) leasing b) following the manufacturer maintenance schedule for warranty reasons c) offloading the car before problems start.

Oil change interval is only a problem for the poor sod who purchases a used (pre owned) car and he/she will have no means of knowing frequent or infrequent oil changes so there is no real value attached to it

 

Good point. I plan to have the oil change done at 1 year for my PHEV (which will probaly have 7k engine miles at 1 year). Probably not by the dealer because frequently, when i send my car to a dealer (RR or Lexus), it seems to come back with some new problem! Riskiest have been the 30k and 60k service on Lexuses - it seemed like they invent the a problem or cause a problem! BMWs never had such an issue, post service - interestingly so because the maintenance is free for 36 months on the BMW.
I had a perfectly working RR and when I sent it to the dealer at 10k miles (I dont recall why) - soon after I got it back, I had the issue of "loss of drive". It was working fine for 10k miles and right after visitting the service/dealer, it has a serious issue? Coincidence? It might not have been wilful negligence. It is not just range rover. Over the past 30 years, I realized that cars work best, as long as they don't need dealer service, and as long as I dont take them to the dealer for the 30k or 60k service! Just change the oil and air filters keep going!

I prefer to have my cars oil change done by my (known) local mechanic. I buy the filter from the dealership; this way, there is a record; also there is a record at my local shop. I believe that the filters sold by mechanis/oil change centers would not be as good. I might take the Castrol oil also for RR. We dont know what type of bulk synthetic, the mechanics buy (probably the cheapest kind? ).

My car with a low mileage and ICE engine barely ever used wants service now already, after 22 months instead of 24 months. I hate it but I have to pay for it, as I don't want to lose the rest of a warranty. 🤷‍♂️

 

My P550e is 12 months old, now with 13.5 miles (probably 7k ICE miles). Today, I emailed the dealer, asking if an oil change needs to be done. His reply was that it does not need service until 21k miles.
I will have an outside mechanic change the oil at 10k ICE miles.

 

If your Range Rover has the V8 BMW S68 engine you should change the oil every 7500 miles. That engine is extremely high performance (it's in the M series) and with 20k oil change intervals, it will be a brick at 100k miles.
