How Long Does Service Usually Take?

My Range Rover is in today for its first service (7,500 miles). I asked the valet if he could estimate the time to return and he said that I would most likely receive it next week (today is Tuesday) since they are pretty backed up.

Is this typical?

- My dealership is A&L Motors in Monroeville, PA.

What!?!?! That's ridiculous. Mine doesn't take more than a few hours. I can even wait for it if I really want.

Thanks.

That really sucks. "Next week" for a kick-the-tires inspection? Laughable. I suppose it is completely dealer dependent, though. What'll happen is it'll get done before next week. They like to surprise you to make it look like good service. You'll get a call saying, "Mr. Luxury1, we were able to complete your service ahead of schedule since you are a valued customer." Before you drive it home, make sure they put the oil cap back on and didn't do any body damage.

That is what I thought. Maybe it is just their valet service that is backed up. Very strange. In the meantime I have an LR2. I am curious to drive it and will tell you guys about some of the features after I spend some time in it.

I worked in the parts department at A&L back when it was BMW, Datsun & Jag in 1981.

Valet?
That's what they call the wash boy now?

Oil changes were always done by the lowest-on-the-totum-pole mechanic.
Or the wash boy if no one was buying a car that day.

That's where I first heard the (probably urban legend) story about someone's nephew who was given the "valet" job there, and proceeded to put like 18 quarts of oil into a vehicle, because "it was only half-way up the dipstick".

To the good, I did get to drive the owner's (Al Lamfrom?) Jag a couple of times. Which was pretty sweet for an 18-year-old. (I didn't choose my parents wisely enough for them to buy me one)

Luxury1: I still have family back in the 'burgh.. Where do you live?

Sounds like you need to do some sucking up at the dealer.

Once a month I stop at Dunkin Dounuts and buy 4 boxes of coffee, 250 munckins, and 3 dozen dounuts and being them to the dealer.

6 months of doing so, I was told not to call , and to just show up for whatever I needed.
I like the way you think RoverfreakNH. Good stuff! Haha.

Thanks.

I grew up in Monroeville was a Gateway Gator many years back. Ive never heard of any waiting period that long for basically and oil change. I would have just told them to call me when they can do it and bring the car back. But, atleast you have a car to drive that gets much better gas mileage.

I disagree 80,000%. I just bought this car seven months ago (sticker $80,000) and I turn over cars every two years or so. This is a brand new Range Rover and they need to impress me or I will walk without question. I am not expecting Lexus service but something comparable to BMW or Mercedes. It is worth their while for sure!

They did call tonight and said that the car was finished so we will see. Hopefully the couple of things I asked for were done including the automatic drive away locks and a power folding mirror issue.

You need to look at it this way...

80K truck, they made MAYBE 4-6K on the sale of that truck to you.

I was looking at the 08 west minster last week, while my radiator was getting replaced. Sticker was $105,700, I asked the GM whom I've got a good relationship with, what I would pay for it. He then pulled out a binder and took out the invoice for the truck that I was looking at. The invoice was 96,850 +750 for destination charge. The dealerships don't make a lot on the rovers they sell. The sale of a truck is barely enough to pay the sales person, sales manager, and kid to clean it before you pick your new truck up.

Dealerships make 85% of their monthly cash flow from the service department and parts department, recall work, pre-paid maintance, and warrentee work.

So if I have to spend 40-50 bucks to have priority service, and sit and socialize with the rover team taking care of my rover, instead of my truck sitting for 2,3 days, and having to be driving a LOVELY LR2 or LR3, it's worth it to me.

You will get a better respect everytime you go in there for service. They will pay more attention to your issues and problems with making them feel like they matter to you, and you appreacate their efforts to make you happy.

It's like a you and your loved one.. you gotta give love, to get love....

You may want to call first and verify everything is done. It could save you some time and frustration.

Have you tried Rahal in Warrendale? It's the best dealer group I have ever dealt with. I never have to leave my vehicles for regular service. It wouldn't be that bad to hop over to 79 and head north.

Lexus of North hills (owned by Rohrich) is right next door, for your other vehicles.

I went into Rahal first when I was buying this past summer but you have to be careful with these guys. I was trading in a porsche for my Range Rover. Before I went to Land Rover I went to the Rahal BMW dealership to look at a 750li. They looked up the (unfair) deal that BMW made and gave me the same thing which I thought was pretty shady. So I decided to go out of the Rahal system to A&L and they made it happen. I got the impression that they do this a lot so if you are shopping around in Pittsburgh, definitely consider this.

From a service side though I think they are pretty good. I bought my last Mercedes from the dealership in Wexford. I was always happy with them. The only drawback is that if they give you a loaner, it is a Toyota Camry and A&L uses Land Rovers. Hardly noteworthy especially if you wait for your car.

Since when did lexus become a more luxurious car the bmw or Mercedes?
Its an over priced Toyota IMO.
You don't own a Lexus then. Lexus service is unbelievable and the cars have nothing wrong with them 99% of the time. It really is astonishing. I didn't pay $77k for nothing.

Now you have to read what I wrote and not what I didn't write. I didn't state that Lexus is more luxurious, that is up for debate but the whole experience was better than any other I have had to date and I have owned Mercedes, BMW's and a Porsche.

And for your brilliant and insightful comment about Lexus being an overpriced Toyota; Then you would fully agree that Range Rover is undoubtedly an over priced Indica V2. Of course you would. It is the same company so it MUST be the same car. Also, an Acura NSX is exactly the same as a Honda Civic DX. Or a row boat is the exact same as a 750 jet ski.

I personally do have the utmost respect for the luxury component of Lexus. I chose the LS over the S550/750il/A8 mainly for the feeling of luxury (as well as other factors). I love it and don't regret my decision for a second.

I'm on the fence with some of the comments about lexus.

1.) I personally think the seats are too hard . I've been in my VPs LS , yeah, it's quiet, smooth and a lot of nice features. My VP has even said that he misses his 750IL " even though it was a high maintaince B#@CH" .

2.) Yes they are more reliable, but I personally don't see or feel that " feeling" when i've been in or really checked out any of the Lexus models. as when I'm in my rover or M5.

3.) You may get better service if you were a little less abrasive , if you are this aggressive on postings, can only imagine how you are at the dealerships or on the phone with dealerships.

I have had a 4-runner and it was the biggest POS I ever owned and Toyota bought it back from me, because they could not fix it.

Just my 2 cents after 3 glasses of wine  .. DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY, JUST COMMENTING ON WHAT I SEE HERE....

Whenever I actually have an issue with my dealer, when I am fighting with them about how I need to pay for something that I don't need to, I either call LRNA, the owner of my dealer who I happen to know, or both.

I am not unreasonable, all that I ask is that they repair what I ask them to that is covered under the warranty. Knauz in Lake Bluff, IL always gets me my car on time, fixes what I need done, but I have to raise hell to get it done.

Land Rover has NEVER been known for good service... Their dealers are a pain in the ass... They are really lucky I like the product so much, otherwise I would go somewhere else.

As good as Lexus is in service, Toyota is just as bad here. I had a 2001 Land Cruiser that surprisingly was less reliable than either of my Rovers... I am so glad I never have to walk in my Toyota dealer again. My favorite was that they smashed my front bumper during the time it was in service, and tried to tell me it came in that way.

Luxury1 - We are all entitled to our own opinions... and I happen to agree with Nsxxtreme. I bought the Land Cruiser because the LX was $10k more for a stupid hydraulic suspension that was not usable off road, as advertised. I had a wood package that was just as nice, the leather was the same crappy quality, my GPS system said toyota instead of Lexus... Uhh, oh I had different head lights and tail lights... That was pretty much it. But again, opinion.

Actually, you have told us before about your bad experience with your 4Runner, and I responded then that I had owned 4Runners for about 12 years and driven them in a variety of conditions and they were great for me.

So I won't say that again. :)

My point is, is that NO SUV, car or truck from ANY company is flawless, they all have their " issues" and " service department " issues...

Some worse than others, some good, some excellent, some a POS... they are machines, they will break, some more that other, some less than others...

as far as likes and dislikes.. to each their own... live and learn, and MOVE ON.... That is why there are hundreds of different models of cars, SUVs, and trucks, if you don't like one, or have problems with one, you move on... plain and simple.
