From RHD to LHD?

Hello all,

I'm new to the classic Range Rover scene, and have a " small" question. I couldn't find any other topics aubout this.

I'll start with a small introduction: I'm the waterdude, a 32 year old engineer and I live in Holland. I have '74 Range Rover , imported from the UK, so it's a RHD. Now, I don't realy mind, but my girlfriend hates driving a RHD car in good old LHD holland. I'd like to convert it now, from RHD to LHD. Parts should not be a big problem, but I do need to know if it can be done, and what parts I will need to get a hold of. O, and the car has power steering. It's a great thing to have around for fun, hollydays and much more. I'd love to keep it, but then she will have to be able to use it aswell.

I'd love to get some tips and trics!

Many thanks,

Yuri

Right, I've started scanning.
The first issue (6 pages) is here for download

When you click on each picture there should be an "all sizes" tab above it, click on that to get the big size. Let me know if you can't.
I'm just about to do issue 2 and will probably do the rest tomorrow night.

Tim,

Thanks a million for those scans :D ! They are of great help, even though my car is a ‘ 74 first series classic. If started collecting parts, and today another batch will be coming in.

Some other nice story about my Rangie? Well, after it had been standing for some 5 months I decided to take her for a spin. I noticed the clutch pedal was on the floor…. Air in the system I presumed. So, I bled the system, checked fluid level and of I went, straight to France, witch is only 400 miles

Well… driving past Luxemburg the taillights died on me, so a quick repair was made with help of a wire straight from the licence plate lights. Going on, the engine was starting to misfire and pull less and less :? . Finally, when hitting some heavy fog, the right front low beam died as well… Just great…in the end I made it.

The next morning I fixed all the electrical gremlins, adjusted the ignition dwell and timing and she was up and running again as she should :D . For the next two days all was very well, until the moment I left, heading back to Holland. Pressed down the clutch…. Nothing. Well, a lot of noise from the gearbox, and a nice well of clutch fluid on the road. O bloody hell! The slave cylinder just died… As it was Sunday 17.00hrs, and I had to back at the office on Monday a 08.00hrs, I decided to head back without a working clutch. Now, I can tell you, this is quite an adventure, aspecially because I had to go straight to the town centre’s of Liege and Maastricht… Lot’s of traffic lights, lot’s of traffic. I finally came home to Amsterdam at midnight  .

Yesterday I got a new slave cylinder, fixed the bloody car and I’ m running her to the office today!

YES!!! WE DID IT!!

It's got a new MOT! As it's a classic ( over 30 years old in Holland) the MOT is valid for 2 years!
Only remark from the MOT guy: "ya better get new rear tyres, and ya gon'na have a hole in one of the sills"

So I've got 2 years to have the sills done, and I'm going to have the rear tyres changed soon.

Well, it's France actually  and it's the good life indeed 8) Last weekend we went to east-germany to do some wild pig hunting. Great car, great hunt. Just bought her some new michelin tyres, some new sparkplug leads and all most all parts for the conversion to LHD are in my garage now! When the hun ting season ends ( end of january) I'll start the project :geek:

You guys are just not asking the right question.

Is she SIZZLING HOT??? The Rangie? The GF? Of course we need pics of both to be sure how best to proceed.

Can you get a "doner" vehicle? A LHD, preferably one that was nice then got hit in the back by a big truck? Then you have the parts and the manual, in 3D. Of course, there will be wear items you may wish to replace, but I would definitely want a 2nd vehicle to get parts from.

Well..... If the GF is hot will always be a question for you guys  The Rangie how ever: The coolest car I've had so far

About getting a donor-car: I could have done this. Problem is, I have no space where I can rip it in pieces. So, I just made a list of what I needed, found some guy thru internet who had a donor he used for the body and engine, and from that car I got all the parts. I must say: converting a Range Rover from RHD to LHD is no problem at all. Even without a propor donorcar as a 3-D manual it can be done. Now, I must be honest.... I used to work as a mechanic for 10 years 8)

What a great car. NOT  ! This morning there was a pond of fluid on the street.... brake fluid it turned out to be. Soon I found what was leaking: the brake master cylinder. O boy... Well, the Land Rover specialist some 15 miles from me had a nice overhaul kit that was mine for $15, so I ripped apart the unit, checked the inside cleaned it and punt in a nice new set of rubbers. Problem solved. Now bleeding the system... I've got an "eezy-bleed" kit, that works on tyre pressure. Never used it before, and I must say: Great tool! Bleeding the bloody thing was an easy job.

Only thing is: It's freak'in cold outside for Dutchmen. For the first time in let say 10 years we're having snow and daytime temperatures are a healthy - 2 tot -5 celcius, combined with the famous Dutch winds. I think I've earned my glass of Scotch now, don't I

Just a small update for now: This week I finaly got to changing the rear springs. As the car is running on LPG and there is a hefty LPG tank in the rear, it started to "Hang Over" a bit.. So, I nice set of HD-rear coilsprings did the trick. Also I changed the bushes from the rear trailingarms. The handling has realy improved with a 100%! :D :D
