HI,
IV'E GOT AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY P38 4.6 AUTO RR 1997. JUST DROPPED IT OFF AT THE GARAGE VIA THE RAC TO TRY AND FIND OUT WHY IT WON'T DRIVE / REV.
SOMETIMES ITS FINE , SOMETIMES IT WILL GO AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, BUT LAST NIGHT NOT AT ALL. WENT TO GARAGE THIS MORNING STARTED IT ,PUT IT IN D AND DROVE IT INTO THE GARAGE. PUT IT IN REVERSE AND NOW ITS STUCK AGAIN. THEY PUT THE TESTBOOKJOBBY ON IT AND IT SHOWS ALL THE GEARS ARE WORKING WITH NO FAULTS, BUT IT WON'T MOVE. HAS ANYONE COME ACROSS IT BEFORE. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT TOO MUCH OIL IN THE AUTOBOX COULD CAUSE AN HYDRAULIC LOCKUP OK SOMETHING.

First thing I would do is to check the transmission oil, just for the sake of it. In my opinion it is the cabling linking the shifter to the transmission that is shot on yours. Mine is showing signs that it is wearing out and requires me to pull it past reverse almost into neutral to back up or almost to 3 if I want to put it in drive.

Maybe it won't go into gear because the caps lock is stuck.

Don't forget to check the shift knob. Might be giving way, the plastic parts inside. But usually it just goes out completely, no warning. I believe there is a little allen screw near the bottom-front of the leather knob. Take the knob off and see if you manually press the button, does it shift ok. If so, the knob is failing. (If not, remember this b/c it will fail sooner or later.)

HI,THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS (and no it isnt the cap lock  ). TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST TODAY WHO NOTICED IT HAD HAD A NEW ENGINE LAST WEEK AND THINKS THAT THE FLEXIPLATE HAS BEEN BENT AND THIS IS CAUSING IT TO BECOME DISENGAGED FROM THE PUMP WHICH IS WHY THE DRIVE IS INTERMITTENT, WILL KNOW MORE TOMORROW WHEN HE HAS IT OUT. BFN

From what I know the flexplate joins the torque converter to the flywheel> So I don't think thats the issue. However if motor was pulled the pump could be damaged if torque converter falls out on disassembly. Are you saying that you bought this rangie without knowing that it had a new engine in there. Wow and lucky you and welcome to the site.
