In regard to your problem, do you have the correct wiring diagrams for your year model? If not i would highly recommend that you start with this information, i think Atlantic British sell a CD that covers all workshop and wiring manuals.
I would get the wiring info and compare it to what you have and then decide whether to replace the wiring loom or just repair the existing one.

I would say there is a good chance it's wiring/earthing related. Without looking at the vehicle it's hard to say, but if it's as bad as you describe i would be very tempted to re-wire it, no small undertaking though...
