'What is wrong in this picture?' Took me some time to get it, but I am dumb.

Not dumb at all. If I had thought to pull the front cover apart I would have found this alot sooner. You are dead right though, there should be three gears. Instead I have two gears and 15 little nubs that used to be the outside gear.

I notice that my front cover already has the updated front seal installed. I can only guess that the front cover was pulled to install it and they nicked or fouled the oil pump gears when reinstalling. I can easily picture that a crack would lead to a chain reaction busting of the outter gear.

Thanks goodness I was at idle! Highway speed could easily have been a new front cover assembly!

So after a quick shot of orange cleaner, and installing the new gears, here is what it should look like when you pull the pump cover off.

AH! now I see your confusion in the other thread! that pump is destroyed (obviously) and probably took out the front-cover with it... the bits (when they used to be one piece) rotated at just a bit less than crank speed

Has the outer gear breaking up not caused damage to the housing? I would check carefully that the gears are free to turn when the plate is fitted and torqued up.

I had two very tiny nics in the aluminum front cover and one in the pump cover. No gouging or scoring is present. I can press the outter rotor into place with very little effort. I was just wasn't sure if it was really supposed to be firm or was to spin. Thanks for the confirmation of what came to me at 3:00 this morning. :? It's amazing how walking away from a project will clear things up. :D I am pretty sure that with some very careful emory work on those two nicks all will be fine.
