Folks

I drive a 4.0 1995,over the weekend I was caught in traffic I noticed that the temp. gauge moved from the centre position (white lines)which I have always assumed to be standard towards the Red lines. But I noticed that this does not happen when the car is on Idle(gear in Park position) what can be happening here, can anyone please tell.

When the car is in park the motor is running faster. When your stuck in traffic, there is no cool air flowing around the car, just hot. It could also be a sign of the fan clutch failing.

When you're in D the engine is under load, and thus producing more heat. In N or P you're just idling, and producing a lot less heat.

But it definitely shouldn't be happening, possibly the fan spinning freely or just a coolant system that's in bad shape.
