What effect sport 275/40R20 on normal range rover?

Looking to put some stormer RRS wheels on my range rover but most second hand ones have 275/40r20 tyres?

What effect would this have on the comfort/handling/steering/mpg read out etc? :think:

Currently i have 255/55/r19 on standard vogue 19 inch 6 spoke wheels?

You may not want to hear this but I have just swapped my 255/50 R20 7-spoke Alloys for a set of 255/55 R19 (2010) Alloys to improve the overall ride as anything over 19" cannot provide the full comfort the RR was designed for whatever size tyre you use. :hand:

On a previous RR I have 20" Stormers with 275/40 R20 Toyo tyres and although they looked good and were great on smooth surfaces they simply could not cope with uneven/bumpy roads in the way a FFRR should be able too.

I guess it depends on whether your max priority is Bling looks or true FFRR Powerglide Ride :think:

That's what I was worried about, it's nice and smooth at the moment but assumed the 20's with the lower profile may make it a bit harsh?

I've seen the other post with your 2010 19's and love the look of them but wanted something a bit bigger.

Would standard range rover wheels with 255/50r20 tyres be better than the range rover sport wheels with 275/45r20? :think:
Better but not nearly as good as 19" I am afraid. My previous TDV8 tyres were 255/50 R20 and the ride was not close to the new 19". Extra width helps but not enough to compensate for the reduced tyre wall (aspect) of a 20" rim.

See the following chart to see that whatever the tyre combination you cannot get a perfect 10 "Tyre suspension comfort value" score on 20" rims: http://www.club80-90syncro.co.uk/Syncro_website/TechnicalPages/TRC calculator.htm

However its easy on 19" even with standard 255/55 width tyres as I chose. Range rover have moved to 20" Rims for marketing purposes only and unfortunately have chosen to accept that the ride comfort is reduced. Glad to see that my 19" are still an option for the 2010 Vogue though.
If you are determined to get 20" on the car then I am selling the unmarked 20" 7-Spoke Factory wheels with Continental Cross Contact tyres that I removed from the TDV8. Just posted the advert an hour ago http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....78452&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_768wt_1165 These may be a better option than the lower profile RRS Wheels/Tyres but thats your choice. PM me if this post gets removed by the parking wardens :lol:

Interesting

255/55R19 = score of 10

250/55R20 = score of 8.8

275/40R20 = score of 6.1 - doesn't look too good?
Exactly - great on the smooth & Flat but not so great over the bumpy bits and that's about 25% of our roads these days!

Its not so much a terrible ride just that it COULD be so much better with 18" or 19" (as you are aware) :)

Just noticed you posted 250/55 R20 - that's a bigger total radius I think tyrewall=137.5mm against 255/50 R20 (stock) tyrewall= 127.50mm

275/40 is just 110mm sidewall so smaller radius than stock.

I've been considering the 265/50R20 -- the comfort rating goes up to 9.6 with very little speedo variation from the "stock" 255/50R20 (1.3 km/h variance).

Thoughts?
That's a slightly bigger overall Radius but quite a good compromise if you want to stick with 20". A major downside is Tyre choice is going to be very very limited at that "Odd" size....
I reckon your limited to:

Yokohama V802 :: BLK 111W 265/50 R20
Hankook Ventus ST RH06 :: BLK 109V 265/50 R20
Toyo Proxes S/T :: BLK 112V 265/50 R20
Continental ContiCrossContact UHP 111V XL 265/50 R20
General GRABBER UHP 111V XL 265/50 R20
Nexen ROADIAN HP 111V XL BSW 265/50 R20
Kumho Ecsta STX KL12 107V BSW 265/50 R20
Goodyear EAGLE RS-A 106V 265/50 R20

So there is quite a bit of choice but not a lot in Premium category...

See my Tyre poll for views on some of the above Tyres: http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=35318&start=60&hilit=tyre+poll
See less See more
To make my point a bit stronger I have re-coded the Tyre Calculator and "Borrowed" it for a bit here http://www.garyelliott.co.uk/ranger/tyrecalc.htm

As you will see I have removed the MAX 10 limiter so that you can see how much more comfortable a:

255/55 R19 =10.8 is compared to a 265/50 R20 =9.6

That's a 1.2 difference where just a few points is a big difference....

How about 275/55 R18 = 12.6 and the same rolling radius the others!!! That's "SuperFloating" Ride man :dance:
