I've got a code 44 which I think is the left O2 sensor. Seems like I replaced it last summer but... Anyway the only real problem I have replacing it is the length of the wire from the sensor (Walker 250-23802) to the connector. Any reason that I should not splice some additional wire and save my hands?

I have cleaned and reset and it threw the code again in about four days, cleared it again and it has not thrown the code again but...

Also have that warm idle rough running and sometimes hard starting and it just seems to be worse in warmer weather. I think last summer I replaced the fuel pump with a aftermarket NAPA kind of fits pump so might try replacing it with one that really fits. I also just did (less that two weeks) the wires, plugs, rotor, cap thing so that should be okay.

You can extend the wire, but dot solder the joins on the wires. The sensor uses air traveling down the wires to do its thing, soldering can interfere with it getting the air it needs.
