I am picking up my 17 RR V6 this weekend and will be installing a radar detector.

What is is everyone using for an electrical ground when working with these cars? While aluminum is a good conductor, aluminum oxide is an electrical insulator. Will I be able to get a good ground just attaching to the body?

does the factory wiring harness have grounding points located throughout?

thanks,
Paul

This is all assuming the L494 and the L405 are the same electrically above the overhead console.

For a radar detector and using something like the mirror tap, there's a ground in the harness.

You can use the body for ground if you need to, I have my dash cam and my V1 installed using the overhead console. The V1 plugs into the wire harness for power and ground, and my dash cam is tapped into the wire and the ground is placed under a bolt on the body.

Picture of the ground for the harness is here:

Just remember that you might need a voltage regulator or you will have an issue each time the auto stop / start feature kicks on and off as the detector will re-cycle...

What radar detector are you getting? I would recommend getting a redline instead of V1. I have both and never going back to V1.

I was a die hard Escort fan and then switched to V1 10+ years ago...the best part was the forward compatibility / software updates...What were your experiences that took you to Escort...?

I was a diehard V1 fan and would never think about getting a redline until my V1 was confiscated in Canada. Apparently the V1 is detected by the RDD spectre the cops use. No amount of court date and defense could i get it back. Only the redline and the built in escort models are undetectable.
