I was wondering if anyone on here buys used tires as opposed to forking over a fortune for new tires every time. Does it make financial sense to buy a set of used tires (5-7/32nds) at a drastic discount, recognizing I will have to replace sooner, than buying a brand new set?

I am down to the wear bar on my tires (275 40 R20), and have begun looking into a new set. I would like to stick to the nicer brands, i.e. Michelin Diamaris or the Continental SportContacts, but I am quite sick of shelling out $300-400+ a pop on tires.

Any good sites or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't trust buying used tires. As they say, the tires are the only thing that keeps you planted on the road with your 5000+ lb truck. And, I'm a bit surprised you would consider $1200 a fortune for new tires, considering your driving a truck that's $50k+. It's a good amount of money (a good night at strip club) but when it comes to cars, there are some things you just can't be cheap about and I would say tires are one of them.

As for financial sense, driving a Range Rover in my opinion doesn't make financial sense but it's a luxury and a nice thing to have.

For tires though, I've decided not to go for the "nicer" brands since they don't seem to actually perform better enough to warrant their prices. A lot of members here have raved about the Cooper LTZ's and I'm planning on getting a set of those. Those go for $140 a pop so much more economical.

Just my 0.02.

Just noticed...are you a UVA alumni? I am as well. Go Wahoos!
