I have taken the car to a local specialist who hooked up the computer. No obvious messages.
The engine can start immediately without a problem or hesitation - you can start stop 20 times without fault.
No problem with the battery or starter motor.
On other occasions the car doesn't start or try to start. The key turns and you hear a metallic click sound coming from the engine. It will remain the same for 40 turns of the key. Then it MAY start.
I believe it is something to do with the electrics, or sensor on the auto gear lever (thinks it is in gear)?
It is hard to show the specialist mechanic, as I have to wait until the car starts to get it to the garage, and then it will be fine.
2005/2006 L322 Vogue Supercharged 130k mileage.
Any recommendations welcome.
thanks

I had exactly the same issue with my 2005 SC and the problem was the starter motor. The click you can hear is the solenoid attempting to engage. As it fails and depending on it's position when the engine stops it will jam. So sometimes it engages just fine, others not.

Eventually mine failed completely and wouldn't turn over no matter how many times I tried. Changing the SM sorted it out.

Yeah, its either a set of burned contacts on the starter relay, or a bad starter. You can swap the relay with any other one in the relay box to see if its burned contacts (doubt it but worth a try) but more than likely its a bad starter. My 06 did the same thing at about 150K miles, it started fine 99% of the time and then it would take 4 or 5 turns of the key to get it to start, would happen about once a week for maybe a month, then finally one day it wouldn't start at all no matter how many times i flicked the key. New starter fixed that problem.
