Good day people

Range Rover 1995 diesel.
Tried to use the software but when initilising I get in the TX box ff, and in the Fx Box I get ff 1 reading,
Looks like its working but wont cleard down.\
Any Idea
Thanks

After a search with the right words found my problem I hope.

Its to do with identifying comport and the changing to another.
But I will leave post up in case theres still a problem

The diagnostic forum has a lot more info than this P38 one, look over there.

At times it can be hard to clear the error. It looks like you are connected, the F1 response is good. Look at some of the posts, you may have to try more than one way to get it to work. I have better luck with the engine running, and then shutting engine off even if the software does not say it completed clearing the error. Then unplug the cable and start the engine again.

In the posts, other people have had different experiences and strategy.

I am posting an answer to your original question for people who search on this thread.

If you get a response of both FF and 1 in the Rx buffer, then you are always on the wrong comm port. Some laptops have a loopback comm port, where all outgoing traffic is echoed back in the receive buffer. I can not say why some laptops have this, but it is really annoying. So if you are getting FF and 1 back in the Rx buffer, then you are on this incorrect loopback com port. In fact if you repeated the process with nothing connected to the vehicle or laptop, you would get the same FF and 1 back in the Rx buffer. There by confirming that you are not communicating with the vehicle but rather yourself.

Use the windows device manager to determine which comm ports are avaliable for attempting communication. Have the windows device manager open when you plug in the USB to Serial adapter. You will see a new comm port appear. This new comm port is associated with the USB to Serial adapter. If no new comm port appears, then you will need to back up and find the correct specific drivers for your USB to Serial adapter.

Good luck
