With about 75K on the clock now (2008 NA), I plan to do a transmission pan/filter/fluid change. My question is, are you guys doing a full flush or just adding/topping off the 4 or so quarts that you lose when dropping the pan. I have been hearing from independent and LR mechanics that its not worth the potential problems and headaches that could lead from doing a full flush. With the extra cost of more fluid aside, many believe that you will do more harm than good by doing a FULL flush. They say the filter change is most important and that there have been horror stories regarding our trannys after a full fluid flush (I realize there is variable here of what kind of mileage was on the rig).

Any thoughts from the experienced here?

DIY or having a shop do it?
If DIY, follow the excellent write up regards the fluid chage. It changes 95% of the fluid without the "flush" part. It's the best way to go in my experience.

Replacing old fluid with new fluid should extend the life of the transmission. I like to keep my transmission fluid fresh all the time so I do a drain & fill every 20-30k miles. Transmissions in my 4Runner and Pathfinder have gone over 200k miles each and still performed flawlessly when those vehicles were sold.

I purchased my RR with 52k miles and the first thing I did was change out all 11 quarts of transmission fluid. ZF recommends 60-75k fluid changes. I believe the fluid is completely worn out at that mileage and needs a full change.

No problem mate. I followed that procedure to the T, and it has been perfect ever since. Stan needs a big pat on the back for that one.
