Hey all,

I've read quite a few posts on here about towing. I've towed some things with my 2008 Range Rover Westminster (Supercharged) but I need to ask this anyway.

I just bought a car from half way across the country and I need to get it back to my city. I can either pay $3200 CAD ($2500 USD) or perhaps do it myself or for about $900 CAD, the dealer will load it on a car tractor trailer transport (standard car hauler).

The Range is 7700lbs max.

My load: 3700 lbs
Trailer: 2900 lbs
Tongue: 345 lbs (with a car in the hauler)
Total: 6600 lbs

Distance: 2700 km (one way ...so I'll need to tow the trailer out there and then trailer and car back)

Question is. Is it worth it for me. Lets not take time into consideration here. More along...wear and tear on the Range and gas consumption.

I usually am averaging around 720-740 km / tank. Each tank is $100. So if I average around 500km towing, I'd have to fill up around 11 times. With Canadian gas price, that's $1100

$1100 + $400 (trailer rental) = $1500 (no hotel...if I decide to go to a hotel for a night)


So what do you guys think? Should I pay or haul?

I'd take pleasure in the drive, and the fun of towing it personally :)

$100 to fill?? You use cheap gas in your Supercharged Jaguar engine??

I'd ONLY run 91 octane gas, and personally, I avoid anything with Ethanol in it (94 Octane for example) and even worse, I ONLY use Shell VPOWER 91 octane :)

A few months ago i pulled my 16 foot enclosed motorcycle trailer 4800 miles in 3 weeks total time. On a couple of trips it weighed in at around 8,000 lbs. I was driving 12 hours at a time with my 08 SC. I had no problems.

I am guessing from your post you do not have much experience pulling a trailer?

The first thing you MUST have are trailer brakes. You must wire in a brake controller and add the trailer wiring harness.

You are not going to get the mileage you think pulling that much weight, I normal get 530-550 miles a tank at 18-20MPH, when pulling my big trailer i get 11-13 MPG and 300 miles a tank.

You do not want to lug the motor up hills even though the supercharged rovers have so much low end torque they pull strong down low. Do not use 6th gear pull it is 5th and keep it around 2500 rpms or more. This will reduce the stress on your torque converter and transmission. I think 5th gear at 2500 is around 70 MPH.

Other than that keep you trans fluid changed and you should not have any problems as long as you drive like you have some sense.

I wholeheartedly agree. Towing isn't a mystery— once you have the proper equipment in place it's really just common sense. Don't drive too quickly, don't make sharp turns, give yourself twice as long to slow down, and be smart with the transmission.

Make sure your truck is equipped with the trailer brake controller or you'll be getting yourself into a really bad situation.

My BMW only has 5th gear so I don't have to worry about that, haha. But in general it's smart to drive the transmission in manual mode so you can shift higher and not lug the engine so much. In the BMW Range Rovers, the instruction manual actually recommends starting in the low gearing mode and then switching to the high gearing mode once you're moving.
