A good year ago, I first posted about my frustrations with my 08 HSE and its annoying air conditioning rattle. To revisit the issue:
When first starting the car, the A/C was making mechanical rattling noises which immediately stopped after turning the A/C off. This noise was predominantly happening on a cold start during a hot, steamy Florida day. After driving for a while, the noise became quieter, but immediately came back when the car was parked for a few minutes.
Between Nov 08 and Dec 09 I visited our local dealership 6 or 7 times about this issue. I am now on my third compressor in the vehicle. On top of this ongoing noise, in November the rear of the car started making a constant humming noise while driving, a noise that was dismissed as "normal road noise" by the techs. Normal road noise my arse. I told them I believed that the rear diff was acting up, this idea was responded to with "don't believe what you read on the Internet".
Finally, in Dec I lost my nerve and sent a letter to LR North America and told them to either fix these issues or that I was going to see my attorney. Low and behold, a field service engineer was summoned to check out the car on Wednesday.
Today, I got the car back. Finally, after 13 months of issues, I am at peace. No more noises, the car is finally working the way it was intended to work. Beautiful, quiet, luxurious, superb.
What was wrong? Compressor was fine, it was the arrangement of the A/C refrigerant lines that caused the rattle at certain coolant pressures. They rerouted the lines inside the engine compartment and now there is peace and quiet. AT LAST.
The rear humming turned out to be the rear differential, they replaced it and now there is peace and quiet from the rear as well.
Rejoice. It almost seems surreal to drive the RR without any noises that had been driving me bonkers for the past year. Just thought I'd share.
