The story so far....I am a mechanical novice, with a side order of 'being a klutz'...

My 1996 p38 4.6 HSE petrol auto is stuck on a Cretan mountainside, and has been since January. It had an electrical brainstorm, and today I got the BeCM back from Callrova and fitted it - all electrics except for the lower tailgate lock work as they should. The battery is returning 12.5v, the fusebox is new.

On turning the ignition to stage 3, the starter solenoid clicks, and the starter motor turns over, but is it clear that the motor is not engaged with the flywheel. This fault has only happened since the BeCM had a fit, and might be related to the time the Rangie has stood dead. I have searched the site, without finding quite what I need to know.

So, suggestions for getting the car started. Please bear in mind, that I do not have a pit/ramp/workshop, and, at best can jack the Rangerover up. Secondly, I am at the end of the worst logistics system in Europe - Fedex took 11 days and 17 emails/phonecalls to get the BeCM from the UK to Crete.

BUT - good news - I changed the HEVACS O rings, following the very many tips on this site, so there is some hope for me yet. And, use Callrova for your BeCM problems - I cannot praise them enough.

Regards to all who amused by my 'learning curve'.

your solenoid/starter is kaput from standing idle too long most likely and old age perhaps, does a gentle whack on it [solenoid] do anything/sure its getting full voltage [at the starter/solenoid]?
mine did the same after a period of non use with MOT looming got a new one from island4x4.

Glad to hear you have the BeCM back :)

I would agree that it sounds like the solenoid, but have little experience in that department!
The only other possibility I can think of... is maybe the BeCM & Engine ECU have lost sync, since the BeCM has had work done on it... but if I remember from other threads I've seen on the issue, I'm not sure if you will get a crank from the motor or not...

Let us know how you get on!

Good Luck! L :)

Thanks for all the help so far. I have done most of the above, including beating the bejaysus out of the motor/solenoid, with no joy. Will try another battery as a check, but then it looks like a new motor. For the record, I wouldn't have thought the ECU/BECM synchronisation is a problem - logic tells me that a vehicle specific ECU and BECM should always be able to talk to each other.....? In this case, with a noise from the motor but the engine not turning over, it must be that the flywheel starter ring is not being engaged by the starter motor cogs. In the past, on other cars, even when the battery is low, the engine will turnover - I cant believe that a solenoid is so sensitive to voltage that 12.5v instead of 12.9v wont operate it....
