Speedometer/ cable/ non cable.

Can a non-cable speedometer, speed transducer be fitted to an earlier cable operated Range Rover? I have the complete binnacle and gearbox parts ,is it straight forward to make these work with a fused live to the transducer and from the transducer to the speedo head or does it need to go through the later 14CUX ecu?
