Spare Key replacement

My P38 only came with one remote key.

After searching on here I've found that a cheap 2nd key from ebay won't work unless I hand lots of cash over to a dealer to program it to the car.

Could I get a simple manual key cut at a local locksmith, with no remote which would allow me to atleast get into the car if I lost the remote key? and secondly could I start the engine with this manual key if I use the EKA code in the door lock?

It's just I don't like relying on one key so would like atleast some kind of backup method in place.

I just wasn't sure if I'd over simplified it?

Mine too.

I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a new one - either from LR here or from Rich98.

I do not think that a second hand remote can be programmed to your vehicle, at least without major becm re programming which would disable your present key.
Well,

There's a small problem with this. Thing. I too still haven't been able to get this working. I bought one off ebay cos the previous owner had misused the key and it was very damaged.

The thing is US uses a different frequency than the other exports so there's problem here. Also AFAIK these remotes are coded to the VIN of the vehicle and after reading many posts i think you can't simply reprogram it.
You can indeed get the key blade cut onto a normal laser blank key.

By deactivating the alarm & immobilser you can get away with just using the key.
Is the alarm easy to deactivate? Mine goes off every 5th time or so when I unlock w/ the key. I can see through the car and the passenger side does not unlock. If I open the door, the alarm goes off and the immobilizer kicks in.... Then I have to go through and turn to the right 4 times, left one, right four, left one....
A non-remote key from the dealer was $13. I got 3 :D .

The issue with the remote keys is that if you order from the dealer, they will order Key 3 (look on the back of the remote, it will say 1 or 3, maybe 3 if the P.O. replaced it). Land Rover refuses to sell after key 5.

How do you deactivate the alarm and immobilser?

Faultmate will do it.
