Ok so please allow me to ask a dumb question. The 88 SWB i just picked up has heavy duty rubber mats in the front - that say range rover on them, no carpet. and then in the back seat - raw metal floors. so i want to carpet the interior - do you pull out those rubber mats? I can't imaging they are for under the carpet - right?

My thought was just glue down dynamat with upholstery adhesive, then put the carpet on top of the dynamat, and glue it down? so when and where do the rubber mats come in? was that some sort of accessory or option for wet muddy conditions?

Thanks for any help and guidance you can provide a dumb guy!

The interior would originally have been carpeted and the rubber mats were an optional extra to keep muddy boots off the carpets.

To be clear, under the carpet, was a spongeish padding, that would retain moisture, accelerating floor pan rust. After rust remediation, I’d use DynaMat over the floorpan, then Dynapad on top of that, then carpet. If you don’t care about sound deadening, you could use a bedliner instead of the Dynamat.

87 and 88 models did not have front carpets, they had removable and washable sound/heat absorbent pads and then rubber floor mats on top. the rear end did come with a very thin carpet as did the cargo area.
the 90 and up models did have full carpeting which became more luxurious with every model year there after.

Both of my 88's have/had heavy rubber mats topped with carpeted flood mats up front. Rear seating has thin rubber mat topped with carpet. Cargo area has heavy duty rubber with foam on bottom mat topped with carpet.
