Injuries

The vehicles pose a risk of injuries because:
- vehicles produced between November 2005 and April 2007: Engine oil may migrate from the engine to the brake system causing a progressive loss of braking assistance. In extreme cases, engine oil may migrate to the brake master cylinder, leading to a total loss of braking.
- vehicles produced between May 2007 and June 2009: A temporary sticking of the vacuum non-return valve in the brake assistance vacuum pump may lead to a temporary loss of breaking assistance.

2008 - 43 1
1230/08 Greece

Category: Motor vehicles
Product: Electric booster heater in passenger car

Brand: LAND ROVER
Type/number of model: model Freelander 2 Diesel (programme number P011)

Description: The recall is specific to 2007 to 2009MY Freelander 2 Diesel vehicles fitted with an electric booster heater. VINs from H000100 to H111695.

Country of origin: United Kingdom

No picture available

Fire

The product poses a risk of fire because condensation from the air conditioning evaporator mounted in the air conditioning unit can come into contact with the control circuit for the additional electric booster heater; resulting in a short circuit. This would normally cause draining of the battery which will eventually go flat, leading to a non-start situation.

Additionally, the short circuit may lead to a distinct smell from hot and/or melted components which, in extreme circumstances, may develop into a fire inside the vehicle. All of these symptoms can occur either when the vehicle is in use or parked and unattended.

Category: Motor vehicles
Product: Passenger car
Brand: LAND ROVER
Type/number of model: Passengers’ cars, model Freelander 2/LR2 (program number P009).

Description: The recall concerns 2007 and 2008 model year vehicles, with VINs from ?000201 to ?087347.

Country of origin: United Kingdom

Injuries

The product poses a risk of injuries due to possible loss of the glass panel of the sunroof.

Failure of either the left-side or right-side sunroof guide rail could cause the sunroof to become detached from its operating mechanism and bind. There might be a cracking noise if this condition occurs. If it does occur, the sunroof glass panel will remain attached to its frame, but further attempts to operate it will result in continued noise and abnormal operation due to the binding condition. If a vertical force is applied (for example, if the user is manually aiding the sunroof to close, or wind lift) the glass panel can become fully detached from the vehicle.

Injuries and fire

Some of the affected vehicles may contain a breather pipe that was not manufactured to specification. This may result in excessive swelling and cracking of the retaining grommet and subsequent detachment of the breather pipe from a connector tube. When the fuel level in the tank is above the level of the detached joint, fuel may then enter the breather pipe. The vehicle may exhibit MIL illumination, fuel odour and drivability concerns such as hesitation, misfire, stalling, rough running or difficulty in starting (reasons for probable cause of accident). If the amount of fuel flowing into the breather pipe reaches the vapour canister and exceeds the canister capacity, the excess fuel may be discharged onto the ground (possible cause of fire).

This product poses a risk of injury.
The clip on the front left wheel balance weight may chafe against the brake hose, ABS sensor or brake pad wear sensor. If any of these situations occurs, the driver will have to press down further on the brake pedal, increasing the braking distance and the brake failure warning light or brake pad wear warning light on the dashboard will come on. If braking effectiveness is reduced, this could cause road accidents, irrespective of whether the driver is alerted by the brake failure warning light or brake pad wear sensor light

These cars pose a risk of injuries.

The gearbox may fail to lock when the gearshift lever is put into the parking position “P”, which could lead to the vehicle moving if the handbrake is not activated.

In the case of the Discovery 3, in addition to this defect, the vehicle is equipped with xenon headlights without the system of automatic dynamic height control that is required by law. The rolling away of the vehicle when in the parking position may lead to collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians and cause traffic accidents. The lack of automatic dynamic height control for the xenon headlights of the Discovery 3 could reduce visibility for the driver or blind other vehicles, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.
