I desperately need help now!!!

MY 2000 P38 4.6 V6 HSE 150.000 km

hmmm had an airpocket for some time ago - engine got hot twice for 30 or so seconds - turned off.... anyway got it fixed and everything in that context is OK... but since then the car have had a very rough uneven idle when cold for 30 seconds - and it sounds like someone is banging with a big hammer on the engine itself somewhere in the front of the engine - just changed the oil (Castrol Edge 10W60 and oilfilter - always used that oil and LR-people says it's ok even here in Scandinavia) when the engine warms up the idle becomes more even - but never really super - just pulled one lead at a time - nice even spark.

After 30 seconds the banging goes away but if rev it quickly - just a quick pull in the cable I can get the banging back - it's only a quick bang but still - it should not do that!!!!

When I use the Webasto Preheater the idle is a bit better and the banging is not so loud either... Douh?!

I still haven't had time to change the chain and waterpump and belt tensioner - but don't expect that to help a lot either......

Could it be a camshaft bearing or broken crankshaft??? Please don't say it is!!!!!

Thinking about taking the belt of and running the engine in idle to se if it changes anything (so I could outrule waterpump, power steering pump, Alternator etc)


Any suggestions are VERY welcome - will have to do something soon - before the car breaks down - more than it already have....

Went to see the local "stealer" yesterday - I really dislike the manager at the workshop - because he is a stealer quite literally....

Anyway he listened to the car and said.... I think it's the flexplate/ bush next to the Torque Converter.... in your gearbox - it makes a banging noise like that when it's worn - and the idle is very rough when the car is cold because it's out of alignment - you can still drive with it, but eventually it WILL fail and then you're stuck whereever you are....

How much of a DIY is that - do I need to remove the gearbox?, or can I just pull i backwards a bit and pull the remains out - and replace with a new plate - is a flexplate "made to measure" or does it need some sort of alignment?!

The sound in my car is not that bad - but it's a bit like it..... unfortunately/luckily (don't really care what it is anylonger as long as I find the problem!

Arranged to go to a specialist in automatic transmissions tomorrow morning - 100 km from home - buti f they can find anything - it certainly worth the drive!!!


Spoke to the Land Rover Import company earlier today - and one of the serviceguys there said - use the injectorcleaner - could very well be a dirty injector - leave 10 liter fuel in the tank - fill some injectorcleaner in and have some fun for 5-10 minutes in third gear on a small road.... LOL He said that maybe one of the injectors are "sweating" and leaving unburnt fuel in the inlet manifold - also having the car smell of unfurnt fuel the first seconds when I crank it and let it come to live again...



Anyway - off tomorrow to see the tranny-guys - will keep you posted!

So I went to the tranny-guys - but with not luck :? :? :? They checked the bolts in the torque converter - and they were ok, so no it's simply just to wait until I get my last parts ordered at P38spares.co.uk and then drive the car to lhe local Land Rover Garage and tell them to FIX IT ASAP!!!

If it's something with the engine - isn't it better to put in a new one?! repairing an old one is pretty expensive, so I would guess I would be better of with a new upgraded V8 from RPI Engineering - Any experiences with their things??!!

I'm really confused - never before have I had a sound in my car and not been able to detect it myself - but unfortunatelly I no longer have immediate access to a workshop everyday, so I'll have to pay someone else (AND THAT REALLY HURTS!!!!) almost as much as having other people touch my car.... will they love it as much as I do (NOPE! For them it's just an old banger, and a stupid customer!)
