So I took my 04 RR to the trans shop today to have the 'lifetime' filled trans fluid changed. The owner of the shop, who has serviced mine and my family's cars for along time told me about this fairly new trans fluid that i had not heard of. It's called Wolf's Head 836-92866-56 Super Universal Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. Steve told me he has used it in his VW which has a ZF trans and requires the Esso oil. While I was at the shop, he called Wolfs Head. Wolfs Head said the oil will work in the RR and it can be mixed with the Esso. The good news is the Wolfs head is about 6-7 bucks a quart. Steve did tell me the oil is red in color, not green like the Esso.

I am having a complete flush filter change done in my RR with the Wolfs Head fluid. I will give an update when I get the truck back and drive it for a bit.

Gary,

Regarding your question over on fullfatrr.com concerning the right fluid to use in the ZF 6HP26 transmission fitted in the TDV8, you must use Shell M1375.4

Mobil LT71141 is for the 5-speed ZF 5HP24 ('02-'05 petrol) and Dexron III/Texamatic 7045E is for the GM 5L40-E ('02-'06 diesel)

Gary,

So far, from what I can tell, there isn’t a great deal of information around concerning problems with the ZF 6HP26 transmission. The most well known fault is the uncomfortable 2-1 rollout shift when coming to rest (known affectionately within the BMW community as the ‘tranny slam’). Another is the seized-up bush in the selector lever (Service Bulletin LM307-004) which you mentioned in your PM.

Other than that, Land Rover only seem to offer two solutions to problems with the 6HP26 :

1) double flush the fluid

2) reset the adaptions and reflash the ECU software

If you wanted to shop around for the special fluid, Shell ATF M1375.4 is also sold rebadged as :

ZF Lifeguardfluid6
Aston Martin - Part No. 4G4319A509/AA/S
Audi / VW - Part No. G 055005 A1 / A2 / A6
Bentley - Part No. PY112995PA
BMW - Part No. 8322 0142516
Hyundai - Part No. 040000C90SG
Jaguar - Part No. Jaguar Fluid 8432
Land Rover - Part No. TYK500050
Maserati - Part No. 231603
