Hey guys,

Looking to make a big move, swap from years and years of being a dedicated Mercedes owner and getting into an L494 RRS. I've been looking for a decent CPO RRS in the $50-$60k range, but I'm set on a 2015 (or 14) Supercharged 5.0L with Dynamic Package, so it is VERY slim pickings. And the few that i found that fit the bill were all black, which i can't do being as OCD as i am.

I am wondering, how problematic have these trucks really been? Are they really that devastating to repair on your own? Im coming from an E55 AMG that i did most of the work on myself, transmission service (oil and filter), valve cover gaskets, some sensors, brakes, controls arms, etc. I am definitely not afraid to do the work, but its the electrical gremlins where i hit the wall.

Am i crazy for thinking of buying one without CPO or extended warranty? And if i can't find CPO, is the extended warranty worth it considering the $100 deductible?

Buying a pre owned RR is no different than any other make and model. Find one that has been well cared for overly maintained and has proof of service. Far more people across all makes have problem free ownership that the folks that post easily solved issues on forums. Every make has certain quirks and pitfalls for each model year. Do your research and make sure such issues have already been addressed on any examples you entertain purchase of.

Can you point me to some of te ‘common’ bugs on the L494? My uncle has a 2009 RR Supercharged (big boy) and he’s had a plethora of infotainment and dashboard related quirks and problems. And mirrors and trunk and seats and windows, all going out of sync. It seems to be common on that chassis. Is there a common thing like that on L494 to watch for? I know some had premature waterpump failures, but usually very early, so at 30k miles (where im looking) it’s probably all right.

I have a 14 RRS and it hasn't been back to the dealership since the first few months of ownership for software updates. I had the car tuned within the first 6 months and do my own oil changes (more than recommended and consider myself quite knowledgeable mechanically. So far no problems. It goes out of warranty in 2 months. Hopefully I won't have any major issues.

That’s one thing that’s attractive about no warranty, i definitely plan on a pulley swap and a tune in the very near future.

And it’s been good and solid huh? I have to say that i haven’t really heard any real horror stories about the newer models.

I am pretty sure that the reliability reputation was warranted for the older vehicles but when Ford purchased/owned LR they dumped a ton of money into redesigning the wiring and problem parts. Also, from what I understand the 5.0l motor is a Ford design... I don’t think the L494 has any more issues than any other vehicle. And there doesn’t seem to be any specific problems to look out for yet. Having so much aluminum means corrosion will be reduced as well. As examples brand new Jeep and FCA products have recalls for potential fires due to poor design and new Toyota Tacoma’s have had frame recalls. BMW, Mercedes and literally every vehicle manufacturer are not immune, all have had some sort of issue. As stated above, the individual vehicle is going to make the difference for an L494 in my opinion.

Parts will be expensive compared to volume manufacturers but no more so than the German counterparts.

Going to look at a 2015 RRS with dynamic package. Its everything i want: dynamic, corris gray, brown interior and the wheels that i love. It still has 8 months of factory warranty left, so my plan is to see how things go in that time. Fingers crossed!

This car Looks perfect and not "pimped", a real stunner!
Also from my side I think the L494 is solid in line with the competition. But I would never miss warranty, as every car, even perfect cared could broke from one second to the other...
If the engine, gearbox or main electrics broke, it is good to beeing covered.

At my L320 3.0 diesel broke after 2,5 years with 60k miles the engine, and the same happened at my L494 3.0 diesel hybrid at 90.000 miles.
