Last week, I was able to get the RR really dirty in the National Parks of Utah.

While lunching, I was sitting on the tailgate, along with a fairly heavy cooler.

My wife sat down on the tailgate, and the right retention cable snapped. Not a good marriage moment! ;-)

I checked where it snapped and it was right at the top connection, which had horribly rusted, both the attaching piece and the cable.

I also checked the left, and it was a bit rusted, but nowheres near as badly.

I ordered two new cables that day, which arrived when we returned home.

A very easy swap, although the original cables were attached with torx nuts and the replacements had conventional hex nuts.

It's worth checking on the condition of the retention cables if your rig has a few years on it.
