Range Rover Specialists and Liqui Moly

Greetings everyone,

Does anyone use Liqui Moly Oil in their Rover? I have a 2011 RR Sport HSE. 2 people recommended this oil as the best for my Range, but I wanted a second opinion.

Also, anyone use Rover Specialist in Clifton, NJ. If so, please share your experience.
Thank you,

Pretty good oil, but not the best for the price in my opinion. Amsoil is top tier and only a little bit more if you are going to pay a higher price. For my price conscious mind, I'm running Pennzoil ultra platinum and doing strict 3k oil change intervals. Very important with direct injection to change oil frequently. Just my 2cents, I'm sure someone will chime in with a different opinion.

^^^ what he said, though oil change interval every 5,000 miles - 10,0000 miles depending on engine duty cycle IMHO. Lowest possible NOACK (volatility) oil is very important as well for direct injection; reduction of carbon build-up in intake runners.

My old mechanic (German, but agreed to do my L322) uses Liqui Moly products and I trust him. I believe the top tier AMSOIL full synthetic had the lowest NOACK I could find; stated a 25,000 mile oil change interval but I would change every 10,000 miles maximum.
LiquiMoly has an almost cult like following, similar to AmsOil. I’ve used AmsOil in the past on other vehicles and it’s very good according to the Blackstone reports I got. I’ve got the factory recommended oil in my 3.0 TDV6 now, but will be going to Ravenol next oil change.
I've been using LM for a while with good Blackstone results on the AJ 3.0SC in my wife's Velar:

I've spent enough time on BITOG and various model specific forums to come to the conclusion that Amsoil, LM and RP all benefit from some online hype, but are also good products. I have been using LM because my wife's car was under warranty until recently and it is one of the few oils that I can source here in the States that meets the JLR spec. Also, I'm not going to sweat an extra $10 or $20 on an oil change.

Now that I'm out of warranty, I may be tempted to try the Pennzoil ultra platinum. When we hit 50,000 miles, I'll take the car in for media blasting of the valves. If the LM hasn't been keeping things relatively clean, then I may consider the Pennzoil. If everything looks relatively good, then I'll just stick with the LM.

Not to engage in the LM hype, but I will say that the motor is quieter on a cold start with the LM as opposed to the factory Castrol or the Ravenol that I tried.

X2 on the NOACK importance. Project Farm does some great videos on oil, I believe LM finished mid pack. I've had the chains & guides replaced on my 5.0 and do not want to push the limits with oil. These motors are so sensitive to quality oil in good shape. The Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with filter change is about $70 for me to do. I run an AC Delco filter, it looks the same as OEM and seems fine. For me it's 2 or 3 changes a year at 3k intervals, so $200 bucks a year and I feel confident my engine is healthy. Hell that's like 2 tanks of gas 😆😆.

That said, I think running 5k changes would be ok but you better be using a high end oil. I would never do anything over 5k in any vehicle.

FWIW, in one of my reports Blackstone mentioned that on average, the AJ motor needs oil changes at 6,700 miles. The factory recommended OCI is much too long. Because of our usage pattern on the Velar (wife works from home and it is mostly for road trips and when we need the trailer hitch), it doesn't see much short stop and go usage. As a result, we've pushed the OCI to 8,000 based on Blackstone reports at 6,000 miles on each oil change. Now that we are out of warranty, I'll probably shift to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and a 5,000 OCI and save the money on the Blackstone.
