Hi everyone. I've made up my mind to save up for a RRS SC V8 (plan on being able to pay for it in the next 6 months or so). Because I'll be spending so much money on a vehicle, I want to custom order it so that it has every feature I like. I've been lurking on this website for a while and have seen numerous people talking about ordering their cars at the dealership and having to wait a few months before they took delivery. My question is, if you custom order a vehicle at the dealership, do you pay for the whole thing when you order it? Or do you pay for it when it arrives at the dealership? I'm asking here because I don't want to deal with calling a dealership right now. Thanks in advance.

Depending on the dealership you pay a deposit when you order the vehicle and don’t talk numbers or pay/finance until it arrives. Usually with custom orders your ability to haggle is less.

If you order something reasonable, should you change your mind, the dealer probably won’t care, but if you order something crazy like the orange paint I imagine the dealer will make you commit to buying the car if they can. It would be hard to sell if you change your mind.

It may be a hard sell but state law will control how much, if any, commitment you have to purchase such an ordered new vehicle. For example, I believe that in California you are not required at all to take delivery of a car you custom ordered and are required to get your deposit back, i.e., sucks for the dealer. I've had one dealer ask that if I do not take delivery then I not get back my deposit until someone purchases the car, but I suspect this is just a courtesy and doubt that this is strictly allowed by California law. However, I'm not a lawyer so... :)

I custom ordered mine on an event day I was invited to. They were offering $2500 off if you bought on that day. I also got about $1000 additional off by haggling a bit. They asked for $1000 deposit and it took 4 months to get the car. Only hidden charges was wheel coverage which I did add on time of delivery. Well worth it in my opinion. Good Luck! It’s a great car.

Thank you. I can't wait to place my order. Have my heart set on Carpathian Grey with the 22" 9-spoke black rims.

Good point about enforceability. I think holding the deposit is somewhat reasonable as long as you get it back.

What is sure though is that you won’t win any brownie points with the dealer for future orders if you leave them with an orange sport. ?
