Pulling the Front Differential

1417 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Selby P38
Diff seems to be busted up pretty good considering the metal that came out of the drain. Trying to pull it out but it doesn't want to come. Is there a trick? It comes out almost to the ends of the studs but that is as far as I can get it and then slides back on it's own.
Any help would be appreciated.

G'day Rob,
Well i spose you pulled out the axles :?:
Then if the rubber seal is broken from diff housing all around the diff it should just slide straight off from studs?
Diff must be destroyed so i would shim between housing and diff and get help and prize it out from each side, using large screwdrivers or pry bars if its stuck good you may have replace the whole front end , :crybaby2: so just make sure it has peeled away from rubber gasket try not to damage it as the use of a shim block 1 eight thick to protect it when you replace use ,black silocone ,The right stuff on new diff will re- seal existing seal on housing, :thumb:
Regards Graeme.
Pull out the Axles? What? You have to pull out the axles? A quick reread of the manual say to "remove hub assemblies" How the hell did I miss that? Any advice on that?

you need to retract the half shafts that go to each hub from the diff..

Quite easy,
1, loosen wheel nuts both sides.
2, jack up car and put on 6 tonne jack stands ,Saftey first
3,remove wheel nuts and remove both wheels
4,Remove front calipars
5, unbolt hubs from housing, slide out axles
The hard part is replacing the seals, you will need a large socket or correct circumferance diamater to refit without damaging the new seals,Use synthetic grease on around edge to refit.
Get help to refit axles when new diff is in especially the long shaft, you will damage seal carefully slide along bottom of housing and once the end off the spline of the shaft hits the diff then carefully lift and fit spline into diff,
6, reverse refit hub bolts ,calipiers and once done refit your propshaft and drop and lube up,Test drive and recheck fluid level.Keep an eye out for seal leaks.
Good luck :thumb:
