Power Deployable Side Steps Installed!

I bit the bullet today and had the power deployable side steps installed.

They were $4,000 USD (installed and with tax) which is not cheap but they are really nice. They are very sturdy and make it a lot easier to get in. I knew it would make it easier for my family to get in but I like them too as it is more effortless to jump in.

The control button is located in the area around the sunroof button (the vacant slot that sits next to the sunroof button). This allows you to manually control them but they are also controlled by the remote control and when you click the unlock button on the center console. Of course they tuck in when you put the car in gear.

They look just like they do in the video link...

How did you order them? Through your US LR dealer?
Yep, the dealership takes care of everything so it was super easy. :thumb:
I like them alot. I just can't justify $4000 for some side steps.
Those are awesome, but $4,000?? Geez, that is certainly not cheap but an awesome addition.

Great job.

I used to think that this was rediculous too but then I started to think; I absolutely love this car and don't plan on trading it for at least five years and what is another $4k on a $90,000 car.

Although I have to admit that part of the reason that I bought them is because I thought that they were pretty neat to watch in action :)
Wait, we paid $90k for a car and were complaining about $4k??? Reality Check!

I have the electric steps installed as well and was fortunate to have someone get me cost on them from the factory.

That being said they really are well designed, solid and I love the aluminum strip that they add to the bottom of the car.

Congrats on your install!
I know what you are saying! However, I have a cheap gene that I must constantly fight. Even when I fill up with gas I will go to the station that is a few cents cheaper. In the same breath, I can justify pretty much any car on the face of the earth.

I know, I am nuts
Agoltz, do you have any issues with yours? Since I had them installed I have noted two issues.

First, my steering wheel can't remember its position and every so often the motor keeps driving it one direction or another (for instance, powering itself down even after the limit is reached).

Also, another issue I have is that once the driver door closes, the passenger side step automatically retracts irrespective if there is a person standing on them! They are supposed to stay out for a period of time after closure. My wife was less than impressed with this last night when it almost made her fall.

Adding more electronics to this car probably wasn't a good idea
I do have the steering wheel position problem and was told by the dealer the unit was bad (there is a TSB on this) - it was ordered and I need to bring the car in to swap the unit. Something about the steering wheel memory going bad

The logic of the side steps does not always do what I would expect it to do but I have not had happen what you just mentioned.

The side steps deploy when you put in it Park - weird as you dont know if there are one or two people in the car. The side step of the passenger will stay down even after I lock the car and walk away (and the door was never opened) - it will retract after about 2 minutes.

I have not had the situation you mention although I would not be surprised that that happens if you place the car in R or N or D from Park if you close your door - this might be the idiot proofing where the steps delopy in case the door sensor is not working.

Thanks for the additional info! Mine deploy only when I hit the unlock button (not upon park so there must be different settings).

In both cases when my wife was surfing the board the car was in park and turned off (it was upon exit).

I am going to chat with the dealer.

Thanks again!
BY the way I have the autolock at 10MPH turned on - maybe that has something to do with it?
My one touch sunroof button is screwed up now too so it is going to take an electronics refresh.

By the way, I was going to tell you that the manual says that you have to remove the side steps prior to jacking the car up. That is a point that would be easily missed and I didn't know if you were aware. However, I thought about it and if you deploy the steps in manual mode (for "roof access") you should be able to get around this as the jack point should be exposed enough to get the jack in.
I would pull the fuse on the sunroof / electronics to see if something is on the fritz. Might be something up there is not wired correctly (where the switch is - perhaps the switch is plugged into the sunroof and vice versa - you never know :)
I have an appointment at the dealership on Monday. I don't even want to begin to fiddle with RR electronics
