I have the opportunity to possibly purchase a low milage 1997 4.6 engine. My plan was to put it on an engine stand this winter and basically rebuild and rework everything. And when I choose replace my current engine and rebuild that one. Basically having a spare complete engine readily available. Here is where your opinions are needed: What's a running low milage 1997 4.6 worth?

I have thought about doing the same thing, but I don't plan on spending more than 1k for it. I'm also very cautious about doing it, the last thing I want is an engine with slipped sleeves or a cracked block :shock: .

Make that engine on your stand an LS1, and be the first to figure out how to get it to work in the P. DO IT!!!!!

I did the exact same thing.
Got a motor complete with accessories for $500 to rebuild over winter maybe. The old girl is getting a little tired with 190k on the clock!
The motor also still had the coil packs attached, along with exhaust manifolds etc etc etc. So that gives you an idea on price.

I personally wouldn't touch a used engine without a thorough inspection and magnaflux. Way too many have been overheated.

If you are going to fully rebuild it anyways, I don't see the problem so long as you know it has not been overheated/ran very well before you got it.
Mine will get the full works, so I am not concerned in the slightest to be honest. I honestly think there are a LOT more 4.6's that have never had a slipped liner etc etc etc than ones that have. I spoke to quite a few reputable shops about this subject, and all seem to concur with my personal opinion.
As I said, if you are going to fully rebuild anyway, I have zero problems with it.
A whole lot nicer to take your time with a rebuild and then just swap motors over the course of a weekend, than have it go bang and then panic.

i will have one of those myself tomorrow.
Currently in Bakersfield going to S.San Fran.
I have to be across highway 46 by 6am tomorrow, but then cannot be on I580 until after 6pm tomorrow evening! :doh:

If you're serious about swapping the V8 over, why not install a late model Audi V8 of the same vintage-as it will bolt straight up !

This motor or the equivalent BMW 4.0 V8 should fit in the engine bay and need to check compatibility of the front drive shaft ?

Thanks for the input. I was told the seller wanted $1200USD. I thought it was high for a going on 13 year old engine. We will wait and see.
As far as the LS1 or any other type of engine, i just really wanted a winter project that I could work on at my own pace. I have 2 full-time mechanics that work for me and they have showed interest in checking on my progress. Kmag, my mechanics will be very interested in your post. They wanted to drop an SB chevy in asap! I believe their exact words were "Hell, it cant be that hard. We can figure it out." Problem is...they work on $75K lawnmowers. Not cars. So the computers would pose a problem.

Again, thanks for the pricing advise. I guess we have a little investigating and negotiation to follow.
