had an s.o.s from my wife yesterday morning as the rangie wouldn't start due to flat battery ( measured 9.6v) I put it on charge last night & all seems fine (now 12.5v idle) but im trying to figure out what happened-
I noticed last nightfor the first time that the illumination around the gear shift / low range/hill descent buttons is permanently on even when key is out of the ignition & can you believe that after 4 years owning the car I don't rememember if this is normal? can anyone tell me if this is right or have I got a possible batt drain going on here ?

Yes the light stays on for a fair amount of time after you switch off.

As for the battery drain - try a seach for final stage resistor or fsr. I had battery drain issues and it was this that caused it, basically the resistor had failed and was allowing the fan to run (quietly) after the vehicle was switched off.
