Your friend is correct. However as you have quarter panel scratches, bumper scratches and trim to replace why are you not turning this over to insurance?
Relatively small damage still. I wouldn't put that through insurance. Its not worth having a claim and chances are your rates will go up. Save the insurance for the big stuff.
i think i just want to replace the light and not put the car at the dealership for so long. ill order the light on ebay beacause it seems to be the cheapest option at a whopping $600
Some epoxy to fill in the crack? What are the odds of another scratch/scrape in the next few months in NYC with winter coming? Did someone hit you or did you misjudge and hit something? What are the odds of that happening again soon? Might be worth leaving as is for now and see if you collect any more scrapes over the winter and get it all buffed up like new for next spring.
I would fix it ASAP personally, the man (or woman) is driving a 120k+ SUV and is worried about a small repair like this? But even if he/she leaves the damage to the body, I would certainly at the very least replace the taillight for $600.
i looked on ebay the best price is $500. someone nicked the back of my car and I need to replace the light. anyone know where i can get it cheaper than $500.

It's actually cheaper than I would have guessed...just buy the light and be done with it!
