Hi,

Looking for help with my 1997 P38 diesel.
I recently replaced the starter motor as it’s been sluggish starting and was it was fine for a few days then I tried starting it and the starter motor carried on turning the engine over without the key in the ignition. Disconnected the battery, left it an hour or so tried again fine. This has happened a few times now but on the last occasion it was combined with gearbox fault and the gearbox staying in 2nd or 3rd gear.

Not really sure if anyone could help shed some light on this problem.

Thanks
Callum

Gearbox Fault and staying in 3rd or 4th gear (limp home mode), is a classic sign of low battery voltage. So with the starter hammering the battery that is quite understandable. Check, or preferably change, the starter relay in case it is that sticking. It's the one in the fusebox under the bonnet marked SM.

Thanks Richard,

I changed the starter relay and charged the battery and looks like the gearbox fault is sorted and so far the starter is behaving!
