I want to keep this CD changer as part of the P38 original.
However I would like it to be more consistent in CD playback-skipping etc.

Is is possible to change the disc reader laser system to improve the performance or even play MP3s?

MP3 would be a firmware upgrade not a hardware upgrade. As far as I know there is no such upgrade.

Skipping is usually a sign of disconnected or poorly aligned carriage suspension. I for one can;t remember the last time any of mine skipped... except for off road on washboard or rock trails. Best bet is to disassemble the casing and blow out the assemblies, chamois clean the laser and make sure the suspension is fully attached.

I got so fed up pulling mine apart and trying to get it working that I bought a Grom unit, ripped out the cd player and now enjoy thousands of skip free tracks. Also gives you Bluetooth hands-free calling.
Gotta be worth a consideration

Would a later Alpine changer fit in it's place? Doubt you'd find one that can read mp3 format tracks though as it's a changer built with the intention of giving you a choice of albums.
