Hi all. One fine day driving around 10mph in H drive my Rover P38 jumped out of drive with a bit of a banging sound. I then could shift it into park, reverse, neutral, and low 1 but no drive, low 3, or low 2. The shift lever physically moves but doesn’t engage those gears. I disconnected the XYZ switch shift cable attachment and I can shift through the detents in the transmission.
Is transmission toast, or a mechanical fix a mechanic can sort?

Re: P38 1995 Range Rover won’t shift into Drive

Torsion drive plate between flywheel and torque converter. I think you have to remove an inspection cover to inspect it. If that's not gone then Yep Gearbox/Torque Converter. I hear if you have bit's of steel plate in the inspection of the bell housing that's the torsion plate. If it wa driving well before that maybe that's a likely path/problem.
