Shorter will always be better - but quality synthetic oil should be able to go 10K. The only way to know for sure is to get a used oil analysis done to see what TBN is left etc. If you are doing mostly freeway miles - 10K is probably fine - if you are doing lots of short trips / stop/start - maybe 5K is better ...
You can do it every 7.5k miles. Besides, changing the oil is a lot cheaper than repairing the engine.
