I was checking out e-bay and came accross the OEM GPS for the P38 my question is would this unit work in Namibia and South Africa and would it be possible for me to just load Garmin Maps onto it?

The answer is a "theoretical" yes. However, you will need to get the maps in the correct file format. There were a couple of different models offered. If it's a Phillips Carin the disc drive is DVD. plus it uses some proprietary software to make it run. It also required a firmware update to handle more modern maps. I found that it was very slow to calculate alternative routing -like 45 seconds! compared with less than 5 seconds for my Mio digiwalker which cost the same as the updated mapset DVD for the Carin  I removed the Carin for a future museum exhibit
