Hope someone can help or back up my guess...

About 2 weeks ago, a whirring/humming noise started under the hood while my rover is idling and while driving if my foot is off the gas... My guess is that a pulley is going? :?

How loud is it with the hood open?

It's a little louder with the hood open. Sorry, wish I could be a little more descriptive of the sound...

Take the belt off. Run the engine, and if the whirring is gone, it's a pulley. If so, turn the engine off and spin each pulley individually. If the bearing is good in the pulley, it shouldn't spin for very long, and it should be relatively silent. If a bearing is gone, it will spin for longer than normal, and it will likely whir or rattling noise. If that's the case, it needs replacing. Hopefully it isn't the alternator that's making the sound...

I just replaced my right idler pulley last week. Engine sounds 10 times better!

Thanks! I'll take the belt off and see i it makes a difference. Hopefully it's not the alternator ($$$$$)... That has crossed my mind too...

I diagnosed mine using an automotive stethoscope on each pulley in turn. Pretty cheap and great for isolating noises.

My noise was the tensioner pulley.

Obviously it took me awhile to post back on this topic...

It turned out to be my alternator (does it while driving too, not just idling).

Anyhow,There is a place right down the road from where I work that rebuilds alternators/starters. They'll do it for $135.00
