What does it mean when the HVAC display no longer displays the ambient temperature? The F or C is still present, but not the temperature.

probably just the display starting to fail like most do.

if you press lightly on the screen can you see the #'s?

I tried that. It did not work. I think there's more to it, as I've been receiving strange readings, such as a -40 degree temp that does not change - when the temp is shown...

Sounds like a faulty or losoe connection at your temp sensor. Have you checked it;s connection?
